the commonwealth of virginia has become a battleground. a group, according to recent polls has narrowly split. the big show today was paul ryan himself. the chairman of the house budget committee is regarded as a staunch republican whoa has been widely criticized for having continue veers sell budget cutting plans. >> you think the economy is heading the right direction? you think we are getting our debt and deficit under control? do you think the country's on the right track? you know why? because president obama is our president. and he has put all of his policies in place and they are just not working. >> reporter: both paul ryan and mitt romney left the area here to crowds who were waving them off. they are going to hit other battle ground states, florida, ohio, even south carolina among the states they are going to hit. bruce? >>> a quick question. the crowd, were they excited about paul ryan or was some disappointment expressed? >> reporter: i have to tell you something. the people here were receptive to this. a lot of folks i spoke

that the state of commonwealth could bring up in court last month to try to present to the commonwealth you have done great, extensive reporting on this subject, in particular the congressman using very strong language there, prostituting the state. we know this is -- this is a problem we've acknowledged on this channel, on this air before, the president's team is taking it very seriously. they are fighting measures that are voter i.d. measures that are happening in pennsylvania, wisconsin, florida and ohio. they know that this is going to matter. could it turn the election? >> it could. you look, this has been one of the most significant changes since the 2010 election is the wholesale change in voting laws across the country. more than a dozen states have changed their voting laws to make it harder for obama's base to vote. you look at all the different voting changes, whether it's making it harder to register to vote, cutting back on early voting, passing voter i.d. laws, disenfranchising ex-felons, purging voters. they are all aimed at making it harder for obama's core coalition to

. >> prosecutors with the commonwealth's attorney's office expect tomorrow's hearing to be pretty cat and dry. while the drug -- the judge could actually lower his sentence, it is unlikely. the jury heard the case, came up with the verdict, and the sentencing. >> after months of appeals and various court appearances, a convicted murderer george huguely will enter court thursday facing 26 years in prison for killing 22-year-old yeardley love. a jury listened to weeks of the emotional and graphic testimony and took a little more than nine hours to render its verdict. the charges are second-degree murder, which the jury remained -- recommended 25 years, and grand larceny, which the jury recommended one year. during the trial, the prosecution presented the case that huguely, after spending the day in a drug haze, went to love's apartment that night and burst through the door and struck her some way causing her death. the defense tried to claim her death was an accident. seems the jury believed someone that huguely never intended to kill her. it will be up to the judge if the jury's recomm
