i have not now nor have i ever been a member of the communist party.[laughter] totalitarianism is what happens when you're making other plans. i'm going to talk about the rise of totalitarianism in the middle east, and the american attitude toward it. that took place basically in the 1950's. then i will make some comparisons to the present and stop. i use the word totalitarianism very flexibly. i don't know how many totalitarian regimes we actually have in the middle east, but we do have a lot of monstrous authoritarianism. the era of monstrous authoritarianism in the middle east begins really in the 1950's. it is a product, as i see it, of a number of tectonic shifts in foreign policy. you have the decline of the european imperial powers, the rise of the superpowers, and as the reddish and the french pulled backe had an upsurge of nationalism in the region which led to two dynamics. one was an enormous amount of internecine middle eastern conflict, inter-arab conflict, that had been suppressed by the imperial powers and wasn't really on the bulls mine
