it was founded by this man here, fred ross. -- the community service organization was an organization that promoted civic participation among hispanics and lationos, by providing anguish courses, naturalization classes. voter registration drives. talking to public representatives, the government, and asking for better infrastructure in the barrios. the organization was established in california. in the volunteered effort and was so good at it and so devoted, so she was given the job as a lobbyist for the organization. she had no legal training, but had a talent with words. she was incredibly articulate and persuasive, so she was made the lobbyist. she reported to cesar chaveaz. chavez have been working for cso since 1932 and he became the director of the organization. that is where they met. i found that they had a common interest in farmworkers. because cesar himself came from a farm worker family. they realized that the goal of organizing farmworkers to impr e ve their conditions would be hard to achieve through cso. it had more of an urban focus. the did not want to enter the arena

san diego was a model that worked fantastic where they actually had local community members convening veterans service organizations, state, politicians, nonprofits, private sector and the va all together go diagram and saying how do we actually solve these problems. there they were able to resolve issues much closer to the front line versus kind of these alternative going to mom or dad type of channels which took a lot longer. we now have 46 of those in place today after connecticut being our first one. these are mostly kind of cities. connecticut, alabama, some other ones have done it state wide but these are mostly cities in place. i think if we could work together on some of those tngs that mick them successful, help link, strengthen the communities. we found in about half of the cases like connecticut they actually created a new entity. about half of the cases there was an existing entity and the va wasn't at the table. so we are trying to fix that in a lot of different cases as well and get to the table where we should get the a the table, too, to help solve some of these issues at a more local level. >> gove

community and finding ways to serve. i want to thank our incredible veteran's services organizations who step up from a veterans every dayeam red white and blue, organizations like team rubicon. i know you are ready to run. i want to close with a quick story. we are joined by air force technical sergeant jason miller. where is jason? jason served four tours and came home with his body intact but inside was struggling with wounds nobody could see. jason doesn't mind me telling you he got depressed enough he thought about taking his life. four years ago he wrote about what he was going through and how hard it was to get the services and support he needed. as luck had it, i met with team rubicon which deploys emergency response for disasters. and in addition to making sure the va followed up with had him i asked team rubicon to reach out and jason ended up joining rubicon and deployed to moore, okay and feeling an immediate bond with teammates he threw himself in the work of helping people pick up their lives and found a path to a new life of his own. when jason talks about the new opportunity to serve he quotes gandhi sayi
