actually struggled with people coming here from other places, finding their sanctuary, we are very compassionate city and a tolerant city and an accepting city and so i just want to you know voice my thanks for supervisor weiner for supervisor chair farrell for having this hearing today. and i want to make sure that we can have action that comes out of these series of hearings that we are putting resources where they need to go. and we are actually building all kinds of housing in san francisco and we are looking at our pipeline and be it for housing for family and for the youth and seniors and all of these need to be in the mix. what we have so far is not very dramatic, we need something very dramatic to save our populations here in san francisco and our low income and our communities of color and our queer communities so that we can see san francisco 20 years from now has diversity, i don't want it to be carm el by the sea, that is where we are heading to, that the hearings are putting that movement and the motion into action and so hopefully we can have that come out of this hearing today. and we

economically successful, barbara, but i think we more and more also want to be one of the most compassionate cities you can find so that people in need find themselves, either loss of a job or disabled or other accidents can actually find help from the city. so having said those very general things i also want to make sure we know that kate howard, our budget director is here today and she has the minute details that we're working on. i will remind everybody that one of the challenges this year is that we have 27 of our labor unions having to renegotiate all of their union contracts. and that is not an easy job. but i will say we came to an agreement with the first one just the other night and it was by negotiated agreement so hopefully that will spell we're willing to negotiate through agreements with all the other 26 unions and that's part of the budget as well and we're going to be reporting that up to the board of supervisors as we're challenged with all the other needs from departments and from the communities that are telling us what they think and this is another great forum for that to happ

compassionate. we have to think about the next generation. i grew up in detroit so i'm very sensitive to this. detroit was once the wealthiest cityn america and now the largest bankruptcy. and what happened? people kept kicking the can down the road and refused to accept responsibility for what was going on. some people said there was the union and they played a big role. but they do what they do. they will gladly -- just give me that right now. i don't care about anything else in the future. but the big three automakers and i blame them just as much because they knew that if they kept competing to demand of the union that one day the price would have to be paid but they also knew that by that time they would have long disappeared in their golden parachute and it wouldn't be their problem and this is exactly what we are doing today and in this nation. we have no regard whatsoever for the people that come behind us. we just want ours right now. it's incredibly selfish and un-american and we have to stop it.
