live in concord. emma goss nbc, bay area news. all right, emma, thank you. it's been a quiet 4th of july in oakland today. and that's partially because police temporarily closed the normally high traffic areas in the oakland hills and around lake merritt. nbc bay area's velena jones joins us live from oakland with the effort aimed at making this a safe holiday. that's right. well, we definitely saw an increased police presence throughout the day and are continuing to see that here in oakland. and they are not the only ones the fire department also brought in extra staff on hand, specifically targeting the oakland hills, ready to respond in case anything happens. this is all a part of a coordinated effort involving multiple city departments in an effort to make sure everyone stays safe. this holiday, police patrols and closed streets around lake merritt this 4th of july. yes, we want safety, but it doesn't have to be clamped down and closed. the extra security presence comes as opd expects large crowds to visit the lake over the holiday. it's also in response

santa rosa, vacaville, concord and livermore. likely to get above 105 degrees and possibly even hotter on wednesday. now bayside locations, upper 80s and low 90s and mid 90s around hayward for wednesday. san jose close to 100 degrees. a range of 100 to about 110 degrees out towards concord and fairfield. wednesday and for 4th of july. keep in mind we're going to see the same hot temperatures inland, upper 90s to 105 out towards livermore. low 80s closer to san francisco and still near 90 degrees around oakland. you see the temperatures there and now friday, just a little bit of cooler air right here near the coast. no signs of marine air inland, and it may not even move inland. now as we head into next weekend. so the culprit here is strong high pressure. a lot of times we talk about it in july, centered over arizona or in southern california, but not the case here. it is centered right over northern california through the end of the week. and watch as we move forward through the weekend, saturday and sunday. recentering itself r

turning to aviation now — it's been more than 20 years since concorde touched down for the final timed. but for the past ten years, a us startup called boom supersonic has been planning to bring it back. at the farnborough airshow, our reporter theo leggett caught up with the company's boss, and asked him why the world needs supersonic travel. nobody wants to spend a lot of time on an aeroplane. concorde, marvellous technical accomplishment, but the problem was it was too expensive. £20,000 for a ticket, 100 seats to fill, economically it was on the right proposition but everybody wanted to fly on it. 60 years later, now we have got new technology, carbon fibre composites, digital engineering, vastly improved engines. and now we can get the cost down of supersonic flight to the point that a lot more people can benefit. with overture one, that's what before our first airliner, there will be more like flying business class, three quarters less than concorde, then the second one in the third, they are going to get faster, we will get the costs down and unable supersonic flight for everyb

now livermore and concord tend to be some of our hottest spots. during last week's heat wave, i should say about two weeks ago, we did manage to hit over 100 degrees there, and we do have the influence of some tropical moisture. you can see just to our east there, firing up in the mountains. but for us, it looks like we're going to continue to see the heat might feel a bit muggy at times. humidity right now though, still pretty dry up through parts of santa rosa. notice that 12% concord at 11%, so any time we're seeing that dry kind of low humidity number on there, it brings a concern, as always, for elevated fire danger. your wednesday forecast, we're going to remain in the 80s and the 90s. notice we do kind of back off a bit as far as triple digits go for the interior. the coastline has remained cool and comfortable. and then heading into thursday, we're going to keep some 80s and some 90s on the map. so even though we're not going to be seeing the triple digits for the next stretch of, you know, several days, look at concord, one of the warmer

it's kind of between the cities of concord and bay point. and quickly grow to 200 acres after it started around 2 o'clock this afternoon. but the good news is we just learned within the past 10 minutes that they do have 20% containment on the fire had been 0. so that is a bit of progress here. good news. the fires burning near of 4 rodin nichols road. the evacuation orders and warnings are still in place. bay point library closed early today as a result of this. and the real issue here again, as you see, firefighters doing some work. there's how close the fire is to homes. we'll keep you posted there as we learn more. that's in the delta area. meanwhile, we're also covering this fire that just started near saint olds burning near welsh creek road in calaveras road. it has quickly spread to 50 acres. 0% containment on that one. but it is not burning close to homes right now. >> up north at a particularly vicious butte county cal fire working to put out the largest wildfire that has burned so far this year. it's grown to more while 180,000 acr

right now it is 105 degrees in concord. still steamy there in saint helena, 105 96 in san jose, 80s from san francisco to oakland. excessive heat warning for inland areas extended until 11 p.m. next tuesday. the heat advisory for the bay shoreline extended until then, as well. san francisco, though, expires this thursday at 7 p.m. there's an increased risk of heat illnesses. it's major to extreme inland tomorrow, and you pretty much will know why. as we're entering our day two of our heat wave tomorrow. now, taking a look at the fire conditions just north of calistoga. the toll fire still hot there, gusty and dry. look at the relative humidity. 19. that red flag warning also extended for our hilltops until 5 a.m. friday. gusty winds and low humidity will keep the fire danger elevated, especially since we have really critically dry fuels out there. so we go hour by hour, and tonight we're still in the moderate to high category for many of our inland areas. tomorrow morning you will notice the very high fire danger in our hil

it happened just before 11 o'clock last night on 6 ad and concord. investigators say a man driving a honda civic crashed his car into a concrete barrier on southbound 6.80, just south of highway 4 after the crash. the chp says the guy got out of his car and then was hit by 2 other cars and died at the scene. investigators believe that driver who crashed initially and got out was driving under the influence. the driver of one of the other 2 cars involved was taken to the hospital with major injuries. the chp says the crash is still under investigation. >> the 24 year-old woman suspected of running over a vacaville police officer with her car last week appeared in front of a judge for the first time today. prosecutors are charging serena rodriguez with murder. they say she purposely tried to kill officer matthew bowen under the influence of drugs. rodriguez tried to have her name stricken from the record. but the judge denied the request. her arraignment was pushed to next monday. meanwhile, the vacaville communityeis continuing to come together to sup
