it's a big deal because this is only the second california condor treatment facility in the state. this is the first bird to be treated here. this facility was built for exactly this purpose. oakland zoo vets showed us the bird which is being treated for lead poisoning, the california condor resembles a vulture and it almost became instinct until captive proceeding efforts in the -- breeding efforts in the 1980s became successful. california condors get lead poisoning by eating animals left behind by hunters which is how they become contaminated. oakland zoo vets say opening this new treatment facility will be a great resource. >> this facility allows us to treat these birds for the lead poisoning and hopefully get them back out as soon as we can. >> reporter: the condor is -- this condor here that we're seeing is the oldest living wild raised in the central california flock. there are now mare 230 of them in the wild. just to give you an idea when in the late 1980s, they went down to about 26, you can also go to the oakland zoo website and watch a live stream of the condor just ha
