[ applause ] >> thank you, folks, and good morning. and welcome to america's first district and welcome to jamestown, the locust of so much of your history. it was here where a small group of adventurers established the very foundation of this nation, a nation built on democracy and the rule of law. mr. president, you made all americans proud earlier this summer when you traveled to normandy to recall and honor the sacrifices made there by so many young american patriots, many from right here in virginia. your eloquent words touched us all and what you said there has such resonance for our anniversary gathering today that i want to read a passage from your remarks, speaking of the d day heroes, you said, more powerful than the strength of american arms was the strength of american hearts. these men ran through the fires of hell, moved by a force

in january 1866, 11 groups of black people in pennsylvania sent petitions to the congress of the united states to the committee on judiciary. the 39th congress second session. -- this wasn wrote one of the petitions -- we the members of the american church mostiladelphia respectfully call the attention of your honorable body to the fourth article of the which we findn that the united states shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government did knowing that in many states such a form of government does not exist, we therefore petition for the adoption of the following amendment to the constitution that there shall be no legislation within the united states or its territories against any civilized portion of its inhabitants native born or naturalized on account of race or color. all such legislation petition stated now existing is anti-republican in character and therefore avoid it i note also that the petitioners were a majority of women. there were 28 women and the men were the six ruling elders and the six trustees. year,rly in 1866 the same the north carolin
