there are 435 congressional districts in america. we we reapportionment those districts is everybody gets one and then the 51st state -- seat goes to the largest state. there is a complicated formula they used to decide the series of seats of california guess the 51st seat and california gets the 52nd because it's so big. texas gets the 50 third. that's until you get to the 400 35th seat and it might be the ncaa tournament where you can see the states that just nearly got in the tournament and barely missed out on seats 436-440 if they exist. the broadest conclusion from all that was that texas gained a couple of seats, three seats, florida gained two seats and five other states gained a seat. i have to check that. a couple of the states, mostly in the northeast lost seats stop the outlier was california itself. they lost a congressional district for the first time it became a state. it basically had population growth that didn't keep up with the rest of the growth in the country. to her question about the last administration and its

joining me now is ohio congressional candidate, democrat shontel brown. won against a competitor who has been considered one of the faces of the progressive wing of the democratic party. during your race you used your platform at times to stay close to president biden and the more, quote, moderate leaders of the democratic party. while nina turner campaigned with bernie sanders and other progressives. what does your win tell us about where the future of the democratic party lies and what voters want in ohio? there's been a lot said about your win, eric adams' win in the democratic candidacy for mayor of new york. in your opinion, is that being overblown? is it something else? what does your win mean? >> so, first of all, reverend al, thank you for having me on your show. i'm a big fan. but i think this win says a lot of different things. first and foremost, i've never really ascribed to labels. when i'm helping people get their needs met, when someone calls me and says, shontel, how can i get my hands on a ppe loan, or when is the next food bank or how ca

would likely require explicit congressional authorization. it is useful to note that in our daily lives, we use both central-bank money and commercial bank money for transactions. central bank money, i.e. money that is a liability of the federal reserve, includes physical currency held by the general public and digital account balances held by banks at the federal reserve. the funds banks put into these accounts are called reserve balances, which are used to clear and settle payments between banks. in contrast, checking and savings accounts at commercial banks are liabilities of the banks, not the federal reserve. the bulk of transactions by value that u.s. households and firms make each day use commercial bank money as the payment instrument. under current law, the federal reserve offers accounts and payment services to commercial banks. these accounts provide a risk-free settlement asset for trillions of dollars of daily interbank payments. importantly, the use of central bank money to settle interbank payments promotes financial stability

what about the congressional cemetery, how does that relate to the capitol? >> well, congressional cemetery was the official cemetery before arlington cemetery was established. the congress used to vote to put a gravestone with no body under it necessarily where every member of congress that died and you can see -- over 100, i believe, in congressional cemetery. i was walking through it and they all look really nice there. they cleaned up the cemetery and restored a lot of the tomb stones since i've been in washington. that's a place where you see a lot of ghosts and they, in fact, so many that they have to shut the cemetery at night to keep people from getting injured by the ghosts. but it actually is probably the most expensive dog park in the world, people pay a lot of money to be able to walk their dogs in congressional cemetery because it's prestigious and meet so many people and social activities with them. that's a great place to walk your dog, dog walkers association. but there are lots of ghosts there. people buried. the man in charge of the navy yar

at this time, montana had two congressional seats. but they were both in the same at large district. in other words, the district encompassed the entire state of montana. rankin found that the at large arrangement gave her another advantage. she had more statewide recognition than her competitors. it meant that she had to travel long distances to reach far flung voted populations. she held rallies in train stations, attended community suppers, and visited countless schools across the state. still in an era of political polling she had no idea that she had the support needed to win one of the two seats. in the end there she easily won the top slot in the primary, out earning the next competitors by seven thousand votes. indeed, many democratic women crossed to the republican primary in order to vote for her. on november 6th, 1916, rankin voted for herself in the primary election. as the polls closed she couldn't take the tension of not knowing the outcome. according to her biographer, rankin was unable to bear the suspense. she called

host: "wall street journal" congressional reporter kristina peterson is with us to talk about the houseoming back for a brief amount of work this week. good morning. guest: good morning. host: it is supposed to be august recess, what brings them back to session? guest: the house is only scheduled to be in for two days, but it could be very suspenseful days. earlier this month, the senate passed a roughly $1 trillion structure bill, and the budget resolution, which is the first step in the process known as reconciliation that will allow democrats, if they can stay united, to pass a larger $3.5 trillion budget package. and so, what we have developing now is a standoff between house speaker nancy pelosi and the group of nine moderate house democrats. and on the surface, it is a disagreement about which of those bills comes up first, but really this is a big fight over the overall strategy for democrats on passing both of these bills. and we have been at a standoff for a week and a half, and it will all come to a head tonight and tomorrow when the house takes its first procedural vote on ad
