we have a death penalty in connecticut. to the latest polls over 60% of the connecticut population believes in the death penalty and when polled specifically about this case the number is probably around 70%. and i think people -- i think those people who disagree with the death penalty are -- there is quite a few of them that are disagreeing with how the death penalty has been administered. i think there is a lot of frustration with people staying on death row appeal after appeal and not really being administered properly. if you add those people in and say look if we could do it and administer it effectively would you be in favor of the death penalty, i think it would be higher than 60% in this case. >> kimberly: i think you are right. myself i was a death penalty prosecutor at the the los angeles district attorney's office and this case, of course, really nationally speaking people who are prosecutors, defense attorneys, pretty much seem to agree that this is a case that calls for it. of course, it is not even the decisi

defense rested in the trial of the two men accused of the horrific home invasion and murder in connecticut. overwhelming evidence against them. we'll show you what kind of defense they put on today and where the case goes from here. that's our "crime and punishment" segment tonight. we begin with keeping them honest. with a law enforcement official who seems to be waging a one-man war against a college student. a public servant, an assistant attorney general in the state of michigan, charged with upholding the law. in his spare time, however, he's targeting a single individual who's committed no crime with an ongoing campaign of vitriol and internet attacks. i want to bring you over to the wall here and show you the people involved in this story. it's one of the stranger stories we've reported on recently. this guy here on the left is andrew shirvell, assistant attorney general for the state of michigan. on the right is a young man named chris armstrong, the object of mr. shirvell's considerable attention. chris armstrong is student body president of the university of michigan, he was elec

and one of the biggest supports that our organization does, connecticut turning to youth and families, we do peer-to-peer support, you know, and we do from a lived experience perspective. so my family can support another family on how we accessed the system and how we kind of talked to same of how to access state benefits and a young person in recovery knows how to fill out the form down at the social service office to get you on services to access, you know, a bed, you know, there's also that in between. a lot of those things take weeks sometimes. and, you know, what do you do in between? if there's a critical time and there's a lot community-based peer support out there, you know, mutual support groups or, you know, online stuff where people can connect with people and live recovery experience so that way they at least have some social support, you know, if they're in need of treatment. and then there's also a lot of young people who may not need, you know, residential treatment and they might be better suited to stay at home or to be in the community and just, you know, work on the

two ex-cons accused of slaughtering a connecticut family, a mother and two daughters tortured and then, the mom ordered to withdraw money from her bank. this is video from the bank, the last time we would see her alive. she was trying to save her kids and save her husband who were trapped at home being held hostage. in the end, her two daughters and that woman died. the only survivor, the husband, the father, now facing the accused murderers in court. describing to the jury the terror that went on inside that house. randi kaye reports in tonight's crime and punishment. >> reporter: you're watching a wife and mother in a desperate attempt to save her family. this newly-released bank surveillance video shows jennifer hawke-petit, 9:17 a.m., withdrawing $15,000 from her bank in the small town of cheshire, connecticut. it was monday morning, july 23rd, 2007. about three miles away, something awful, something truly sinister was happening inside her home. her husband, william, was bound and gagged, and along with her two daughters, haley and michaela, was being held hostage. their mom hoped

new developments in a sickening home invasion and murder trial in connecticut.have new 9-1-1 calls released and surveillance video from the morning of the horrifying crime. back in 2007, two were it is reportedly broke into a home and they pete the father with a bat and tied him up in the basement with his two daughters and the suspects tortured the family, murdered and raped the wife, raped the 11-year-old daughter and set a fire which killed the two teenage girls and somehow the father, a doctor, a well respected physician in connecticut escaped and got imself to a neighbor's house clinging to life in front of that home and they called 9-1-1. but it took police more than half an hour to respond and now attorneys for the suspects are using that as part of their defense strategy. now live at the courthouse. jonathan, police were alerted by the 9-1-1 call. how did that come about? >> the attackers took the mother in the family to her local bank demanding she with draw $15,000 and saying they would leave the family alone. they left the father and two doctors tied
