connecticut is shut down from r to n street.definitely a problem for drivers and businesses in that area. news4's tracee wilkins has the story. >> reporter: this water main break happened just before 7:00 a.m. you can see just how much of a mess it caused. debris went everywhere. lots of rocks and dirt. now this is the middle of connecticut avenue, just down from due ppont circle. a number of streets had to be shut so the repair work could begin. these pictures say it all. just before 7:00 a.m., connecticut avenue turned into a river. as a water main break at connecticut and n street sent water and debris floating for blocks. work is already under way to repair a 12-inch water main break that is wreaking havoc in downtown d.c. two blocks of businesses are without water between dupont circle and jefferson place in northwest. no water meant no work for some downtown employees. >> because there's to water, there's going to be no water for air conditioning. so that's going to be pretty unbearable later today. >> reporter: on the oth

if you widen out, at least connecticut avenue is opened in both directions now and northbound connecticut avenue is open two to three lanes of traffic almost normal. southbound, unfortunately, only one lane of cars is getting by. let's go to the hole now. the water main that broke was installed in 1947. and that is a cast iron pike and nobody knows why they break but it's pretty old and the reason it's taking so long to get to it, it's -- changing a whole section of pipe and on top of the water main, there are power cables, optical power cables and telephone lines. if they move too fast, they create more problems and, believe me, this neighborhood today had problems early on, it looked like a puddle on the corner of connecticut avenue and n street. inconvenienced, if you will, for the low-paying cuts. early responding d.c. waterworkers knew there was a big problem underground. and when they managed to open the northbound manhole covers, more water began rushing out because part of the roadway had begin collapsing from the rushing water below. the fire police officials closed down the vehi
