on monday, the president travels to connecticut to continue this same campaign, and connecticut is aymbolic stop on this particular road trip, not just as the other state with a very recent nationally famous mass shooting. it is also part of the very exclusive club of states that are managing to take real, meaningful action on gun safety. a bipartisan task force agreed yesterday on the details of a major overhaul of the state's gun laws and brought the legislation to the floor to the voted on tonight. the measure would require background checks for private gun sales, it would expand the existing assault weapons ban to include 100 new types of military-style rifles as banned assault weapons, it would raise the age required to 18 to 21 and ban ammunition clips with more than ten bullets. if you already own the banned clips, you get to keep them but will have to register with the state police. judging from the local news interviews, there will be some people who already own them. that legislation just passed the state's senate tonight by a vote of 26-10. it is expected to pass through t

in connecticut, while the pro gun reform group started running this ad specifically in connecticut, pushingonnecticut legislators to get a move on on the issue. connecticut is a democratic-controlled state. dan malloy released his list of priorities for gun reform back in february, but despite controlling the governorship and both houses of the legislator, both houses have said firmly they would not be rushed through this process. they said rather their priority was to arrive at consensus legislation with minority republicans in both houses of the legislature even though they did not need to so they could come up with solutions that had bipartisan support. today, opening day, it's happened. they have made their announcement. this is what they're planning on. universal background checks for anybody buying guns in the state, a ban on high capacity magazines and a registry for existing ones. you can also legally put more than ten rounds in any magazine at a licensed shooting range but nowhere else in the state. the republican state senator who represents newtown itself are calling the reforms

is he in rocky hill, connecticut just south of hartford. how are these folks trying to stop it. >> yeah, shep, the town already has gone to court, for example, citing zoning. the local residents here have filed their own lawsuit. shep, they are very upset over this plan. even though the state does insist that the inmates who will be here end of life and inexas stated the folks in this neighborhood don't buy it they do not want ex-cons on parole fresh from prison as their new neighbors. >> every night we go to bed, we're thinking you know are they coming in today? is it going to be transferring the men today or tomorrow? >> i would not let my children play in the yard. i just wouldn't. i wouldn't feel safe letting them play in the one place they should feel safe in their own yard. >> the house surrounding the nursing home and so close like 30, 40 yards away. we went up to the second floor bedroom of one house and we could look right into the window of that nursing home, shep. >> shepard: how are state officials responding to all of this. >>

okay, candy, so the president heads to connecticut this week. he's hoping that programs connecticut's new gun laws will help him promote tougher national gun legislation? >> he's keeping the pressure up. and it is incumbent upon him to do it because he promised the families of newtown and other families of victims of gunfire that he would do it. whether the fact that connecticut, which is a heartbeat away from the tragedy in newtown, whether they're passing strict gun laws -- remember, they already had some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, somehow moves the u.s. senate where gun reform goes next on a federal level. it is a hard case to make but the president does know and toss feel that he has to make that case regardless of the outcome, simply because he has made so many promises to do so. so what he, frankly, has said and what some of those around him have said is, give me something that makes the situation better. maybe it won't be about assault weapons. connecticut had a bill that add 1d 00 new weapons to their assault weapons ban. m

it is bipartisan in connecticut. >> john: lad, let me ask you.as they had to listen to a gauntlet of family for gun control. do you think the parents could open a few eyes or even change a few votes if they brought their stories to washington, d.c.? >> well, i mean, let's be clear they have been bringing those stories to washington, d.c. the newtown families have lobbied on multiple occasions in washington, d.c. there are many other victims and survivors of other significant tragedies that have occurred that have been advocating here. i don't know if there is any more powerful advocate than a mother nature father, son, a family member who loved someone to gun violence. >> john: could you see them welcoming these families into their offices? >> well, yeah. you know, i think i can see that. you know, there have been meetings with victims of survivors of gun violence with republicans who have been raided by the nra. those meetings have been occurring. i think it's important to at least have those conversations. you know, it might not mean 180-degree
