connell? connell: that is easier said than done.r ross was talking to us about shopping lists earlier in the week. nicole petallides on new york stock exchange floor as we wait for that, close this afternoon. we'll see what it will look like on friday. hey, nicole. >> we'll see. apple at $92. jeff greene, billionaire investor, jumped in on facebook. some people got in there and took a chance. names on the move, smith & wesson. this is the gunmaker. hit a new high. up 90% this year. up 11% right now after the latest quarter. winning profit and sales forecast a winner. stern ruger, the other gunmaker, a also a winner this year. big lots, shining as well, better than expected quarterly profit. you know what big lots did well with? furniture and home goods and the like. aeropostale, down 11th quarter in a role. good ol' gamestop, that is under pressure down 7%. analysts said latest quarter is good one. but concerned about the forecast dow down about 40, hold on to the week. we'll see what we got by the closing bell. connell: i'm concern

connell: all right.ort on time, but i wanted to ask you one quick as former nato commander with ukraine, voted to give more independence to the eastern part of the country controlled by the rebels what's happening in ukraine, and how important is that? i don't think we are talking about it because of the news flow as much as we were a few months ago, so your thoughts on ukraine. >> i think it's going to come back into the headlines because you're going to see another press from the separatists in southeast ukraine. the protests are the result of a manifestation of the government trying to work against that. unfortunately, russia's going to continue to lean in. there's another set of sanctions that are, in fact, biting. we're finally seeing putin's famous approval rating going down a bit. that's going to cause a tendency on his part to recreate some success there. i'd say flashing yellow light ahead in ukraine. connell: all right, fair enough. admiral, it was very nice to talk to you. thank you, sir, for

connell. connell: we go back only 10 past the hour. letting day settle in and 588-point drop on the new york stock exchange. we go to new york stock exchange where liz claman is broadcasting from. mr. lockhart thinks rates might be going up. that is something to chew on heading into tomorrow, huh? >> barclays doesn't think so. in fact they made the call at certain point today. we were in the september camp. where we see rate hikes in september. seeing from china. giant dark cloud hovering over market structure, not sure that is the way it should be. market is herd mentality now. when china started to do panic over the weekend, certainly overnight, we saw 8 1/2% clip on that market in shanghai. forget it, all bets were off here. so to see the action we saw here, connell and melissa, to think it we were down 1089 points, clawed back to the point only down 100 and change points for the dow, falling again more than 800 points. stretch it out, 2008, the dow jones industrials was 6,000 and change. w

send it over to connell.onnell: that is why we're watching so closely with china to see how that opens. market drivers today, almost like you can't plan out what you say ahead of time because things change so much last half an hour of trading. we'll to go inside of dow jones industrial average. stocks taking it down almost 205 points after being up nearly 400 plus in the session. you can almost pick them out here. say, just for example, microsoft, goes down 3% and closes at 40 bucks. look at it intraday. this is 43. microsoft is up 43. this right in here, that is last half an hour of trading. these are biggest laggards in the index or dow jones industrial average. and look at the cliff intraday that merck is falling off to end up 5% lower. all these big companies and big stocks are similar. j&j, 90.73 at the close. this is 95, almost 9level it is at. gets to 94 and heads down. we're lower, melissa, for six days in a row which is remarkable in itself, firmly in correction territory. almost more than 11% down f

connell, back to you. >> peter, thanks, give me a lot to talk about. out in jackson hole. >>> with the second straight day of gains for stocks, is it safe to say the worst is over? chad is at washington crossings advisers and lindsey senior at s&p capital. why do you think we see the volatile swings during the day. what does it tell you about the strength of the market? >> there's a tremendous amount of uncertainty within the market, and the backdrop is global growth has been decelerating. started in china but the major concern is the emerging markets, and many of the countries in latin america. over the next 12 months, the market will be higher, rather investors want to be balanced at this point? >> what do the markets tell you? when you see it evaporate and come back that quickly, what does it tell you? >> today was a positive move to see the market react to the good gdp number. the jobless claims. we've seen a lot of good economic data this week and since the july fed meeting going into the third quarter. i think this reminds investors while oversea
