connell has more news on it. go ahead, connell.dd to what we already said and figures that are most important, we talk about iphones, obviously that is the biggest part of their business, apple is doing pretty well in other parts of its business. the ipad business and even mac computers there are strong numbers there as well maybe you wouldn't expect in such a smartphone dominated world. mac sales up 6.7% in the quarter. how about this, for the first time in 14 quarters, ipad shipments went up, rising by 15%. so there is talk maybe people are moving over to just doing all of their work on their phone, not really being interested in using a tablet even if it is an ipad or ipad pro, these numbers would suggest otherwise. not only does apple guide us higher with the next quarter people look closely because of the iphone 8 but other parts of the business, mac and ipad business look fairly strong, guys. david: let's not bury the lead which is at bottom of your screen there, looking after-hours. this is jump of 4% for apple. considering

lauren: connell, that is a good point. as we talk about tax reform, if you give a tax cut, whether repaytry ages of profits, whether its expensing, small equipment you buy, any tax cut, that is meant to grow the economy so the company puts more money into the economy so paychecks get bigger. do you think that is lost with democrats now. >> maybe not just now. maybe their policy what tax cuts mean and what it can do from the economy will be different from what you hear from the republicans. it is real been moye in real pockets. especially between the inauguration and election or inauguration, we saw market run up the environment would be different. now i think to be fair a lot of that is in the market right now. you don't hear as much talk about it as we once did. that different type of environment, one more business-friendly. one with lower taxes, particularly lower corporate taxes is baked into this market. so to david's point, if we get something bigger and better than expected, maybe there is a leg higher. maybe things

connell mcshane live at the new york stock exchange live with that. connell? >> the numbers are good as the tweets and the comments the president just made moments ago illustrate. in terms of context, we can take a closer look and take a look, for example, at the unemployment figures. we have an unemployment rate of 4.4% as of june of this year. the president talking about the lowest level in 17 years. to give him the benefit of the doubt and as you said add some perspective, perhaps the president is looking forward to the big report friday when the rate is supposed to go down to 4.3%. if it does, maybe the lowest level in 16 years. that is close. on another item that he's talked about and talked about it on twitter the other day, wages going on. people making more money. average weekly earnings. $881 versus $905. yeah, they have gone up. people are making money. the perspective wage growth, long before president trump took office, has not kept up with economic growth to his point, it's getting better. also to his point about the dow jones. it's a big gain. 20

let's get to connell mcshane with the latest. connell, the stock is up 5% after hours; right? >> it's doing great, it really is. and we can forget about politics for a minute or two here because this market really loves what it's seeing in terms of corporate earnings and apple is the latest example. it beat the street estimates on both profit and sales. that's fine. but i want to highlight for you two components we picked out of this report that are very, very important. number one, the new iphone coming out in the fall, or at least that's the expectation, people are always looking at iphone sales. backwards first, and then we'll look forwards. in the last quarter, which is apple's fiscal third quarter, the company sold more iphones than expected. how many? 41.03million was the number. the expectation about 40. so bottom line, selling about a million more iphones than wall street emphasis expected. good news, obviously. then we were all looking at what the company might say about the future. again, based on this new iphone supposedly coming out in the fall. but what apple did

phil connell reports.hey're family treasures were collected at castle howard in the 17th and 18th century, treasures as from now are effectively owned by the british taxpayers. ownership of the 89 treasures are owned by the national museum in liverpool, a deal that allows castle howard to wipe out an outstanding tax bill of £5.5 million. it's called the acceptance in lieu scheme and it allows families to pay their tax bills with works of art as long as those works of art are shown to the public, which is great for the regions and the visiting public. for castle howard it is a win—win situation. the 89 items will still be kept and displayed here, a solution which for the owner means fewer sleepless nights. the £5 million we would have had to find from other sources, like selling more objects or land, which would then have incurred more tax, which then would have incurred finding the tax again, it means that cycle is broken and we can get on with the business of preserving and looking after castle howard. al
