let's get the read with connell mcshane outside the new york stock exchange. connell? >> we have these days where we have swinging of at least 500 points or more and some days more than that. every day this week. we go back six trading days, back to the friday of last week, a week ago today, when it all began. when we were down 666 points. whether it's that day, monday, the 1,000 point down day or the bounce back days like today, always 500 points or more in the swings top to bottom, which we haven't seen since october of 2008. six trading days in a row like that. in terms of trends, what we have seen is the shifting of assets this week. nearly $31 billion pulled out of stock funds. $3.7 billion going in to bond funds. $45: billion flowing to money mark funds. we heard the closing bell in the building behind me. to your point, the dow, s&p and nasdaq even with the 300 points on the upside, you'll have a down week. we were down today, we would have said this was the worst week since 08. we avoided that distinction if nothing else. look at individual stocks. a growing nu

connell mcshane is outside the stock exchange where this and the stocks are going down. connell? >> well, to your point, may be nothing like 1987, but volatility did come back here on wall street today and following up on what we saw friday. it was remarkable to watch it throughout the trading session. remember friday the dow was down by 666 points. today at the open, it plunked by about 350 points. don't forget it turned around and came roaring back to just about break even. the nasdaq composite turned higher in the middle of the day today. then those sellers came back. when they came back, they came back with a vengeance. at the low, the dow was down 1,597. these types of sell-offs in the middle of them, of course, can be unsettling. many of the pros we've spoken to insists that it's healthy. listen. >> stocks grinding higher for a long period of time and sharp steep sell offs that flush out nervous money, traders and people that maybe got in a little bit late and then you find the support level and the rally continues. that's what we'll see this time. >> we will see and to tha

but first connell mcshane standing by with the headlines, breaking down the damage, just how bad it was for stocks. >> there is no sugar coating it. this was a rough week for stocks. you can blame it on inflation, possible interest rate hikes. and maybe we went up too far too fast. but the correction is here and it came with a vengeance. the dow plunging almost 1,200 points monday. at one point we were down by nearly 1,600 points. thursday the carnage returned with the dow losing 1,000 points. that was the second biggest single day point droop. thursday saw the dow and s & p enter correction territory with both closing 10% after their record highs. friday was a volatile day. the dow off by nearly 500 points. but then things did turn around in the final hours of trading and we managed a triple digit gain. he single trading day saw a point swing of 500 points on the dow. in the end the dow had its worst week in two years. investors will keep a close watch object things and we'll see how it goes. maria: bcg partners reporting revenue up 18% and given volatility has returned to wall street

to connell mcshane. and there's basically two types of pressure. shareholder pressure and some consumer pressure we're hearing more about from companies. on the shareholder side first, let's take a look at the big gun companies and trading publicly. sturm ruger and american outdoor brands to the downside. blackrock is the largest shareholder of both of these companies and going to reach out to them after the florida school shooting to understand their response to the shooting. issue for blackrock in doing that, it can't simply sell the stocks because they're part of larger indexes. if you own an index fund, the s&p 500 index, russell 2000 index fund, whatever it may be, you expect to own all of the stocks. blackrock spokesman ed sweeney told me, given our inability to sell shares in an index, even if we disagree with management, we focus on engaging with the company, understanding how they're responding to society's expectations of them, we will be engaging with weapons manufacturers and distributors to
