connell mcshane is in indianapolis listening to president, judging what the audience is thinking of allhis. well-received there, connell. that's no surprise. any surprises what the president said? reporter: a little bit on length of it. i think it was longer on my count, 41 minutes than we were led to respect, david. the president started off with orders of support for puerto rico as they deal with the aftermath of hurricane maria. he talked about a few other topics. when it came to taxes no, i don't think there were too many surprises. he went after a couple themes we expected him to and went after them more aggressively than we anticipated he would. one is the middle class. this was not a quote, to your point, tax cut for rich. that is as you were saying, some high income people may end up paying more taxes on that basis. the president over and over again on these remarks in indiana, was adamant the middle class would not. here is an example. >> we will cut taxes for the everyday, hard-working americans, people that work, so long, so hard, and they have been forgotten. but they're not

connell mcshane in indianapolis at the rate of what's to be expected. what are you hearing?interesting to hear about autumn talking about the vice president because in many ways we hear a lot about mike pence that it's to some extent the man of the moment as we wait for the president of the state fairgrounds to make the speech. we expect president trump to make an argument that the governor pence policies can be taken nationally. an example of how we expect him to say that. take a look taxes in the state of indiana under then governor pence has an individual rate of 3.4% cut it down to three and a quarter%. they cut the business tax year. they used to have an estate tax and the repeal of that. in many ways it sounds somewhat similar to what we've been talking about and hearing all day with the trump tax plan that we are unveiled here in a couple hours or corporate rate going down 20% is a red line. more goodness tax breaks collapsing the rates down to three, top rated 35%. not an exact replica, but could be used as a model. another thing interesting is who is going to be her

connell mcshane has the latest. it looks beyond surreal. reporter: it is. as we knew and watched hear the reports that the death toll would be fluctuating. it has been, 2 it 5 dead is the late -- 225 dead latest number from the mexican government officials. emergency responders are on the scene. search continues. people coming in with their bare hand. they brought dogs in for trained for this kind of thing. they're trying to see any sign of life. boy, look at that. this is magnitude 7.1 quake. the epicenter 70 miles southeast of mexico city. the stories of destruction coming in are really something else. the worst of those stories has to be a school in mexico city that collapsed. the quake hit about 1:00 in the afternoon. the school day was in session. there have been 25 bodies recovered we're told from the site, from the school. all but four of the 25 children. there have been stories of parents getting whatsapp messages from children trapped in the rubble. almost a day later, they don't want to give up hope. it is beyond eerie. this disaster occurred. rev

connell mcshane's been keeping track of it because this goes from bad to worse. >> reporter: oh, yeahigure out what's happening in puerto rico, but there's a high level of concern with this dam damaged by the hurricane. we're still being told there's a danger that it could fail. it's in the northwestern section of the island. now, if it were to fail, this would be a big, big deal, 70,000 people could be in danger, so they have a flash flood warning for that area that surrounds it. they're evacuating thousands of people in the area that surrounds it. no reports to suggest that it has a failed, just that there is a danger. so that's certainly one of many big concerns. i mentioned how difficult it is to communicate, and puerto ricans have a number of other issues as well. as you see some of the clean-up efforts, there have been ten deaths on the island blamed on the storm, very little cell service, if any. there's no power at all. you have shortages being reported for things like food and water and fuel, and you have people who have been waiting in lines for hours and hours just to get g

connell mcshane and the traffic and everything else. of these issues. the question is what would be different this time? >> right. i mean, i think with the the north korea issue all summer we talked about it. it's been exactly the same. i don't think it's changed now unless there's something that we don't know. it won't change until it changes if that kind of doesn't make sense. neil: they want to put a little pressure on china. presumably we have and to little -- >> the latest rounds of sanction which is was the most severe, we were told, it's just starting to take effect. take effect. a few times. they will keep doing what they are doing. unless they cross the line, which we don't know what the line, is be the way, nothing changes. neil: you know what's scary, think about the possibility that china can't control them. >> yeah. i think that's more than a possibility. that's been the way it is. to get back to what the guy's motivations are, kim jong un and presumably most people think that motivations are remaining as he is. he thinks h

connell mcshane is there. but the president's going to his home turf in indiana, isn't he?f and i think that's the larger point. you talk about the details what we expect to hear today but where it is happening is also very important. vice president mike pence, his governor here, and we expect the president to point out things got better in indiana, that can be used as a model for the nation. i have three quick examples. unemployment rate, 8.4%, january 2013 when he's governor, down to 4% even so the argument there is lower taxes, more job, simple. taxes under pence, on the state level went down. individuals cut that. businesses cut the rate for businesses. there was an estate tax and got rid of it. as the final of the three examples, the fiscal situation, a $40 million surplus was left by mike pence in the state of indiana, that gets to the pay for, but the larger point, mike pence in indiana, can we take that argument national. we expect to hear a lot today. and finally, stuart, heard you talking about bringing democrats on board. that may be part of why this event is hel
