>> rick: conner powell reporting from jerusalem. thanks very much. >> arthel: well, the moon will be at its biggest and brightest of the year as it passes closer to earth than usual tonight's. the super moon will appear 14% larger than normal, which really isn't noticeable to the naked eye, but astronomers say it will still be worth a gander. as with any super moon events, high tides are in the forecast. but the effect is expected to be small. meteorologist janis dean is live with the fox extreme weather center. >> they always say that on a full moon, weird stuff happens. so what happens if this is super moon? super weird stuff going to happen. [ laughter ] we'll check in tomorrow. okay? so here is the deal with the super moon. moon's orbit is not a perfect circle. if it was, it would alt always be the same distance to the earth. tonight and overnight, that's the average difference, 230,000 miles, as it gets closer, we'll be at 220,000 miles. so it will appear to be 14% closer, but in reality, 7% closer, and the closest we will see

conner powell, thank you. jamie? >> jamie: you may already know it's been a rough weekend for much of the country because of tropical storm andrea. but there is a new round of extreme weather. it's battering parts of the plains and the south. and hot temperatures? >> the west is baking with record temperatures. i will show you that in a second. today, severe weather across the plains and big thunderstorms across the southeast. most of those not severe. any severe weather we see as the cold front pulls into missouri and arkansas and towards illinois. this is the bull's-eye to the north of the st. louis area and down to around greenville, mississippi. all of that mid-mississippi river valley. mostly, we are talking about strong could see a small tornado develop. but it's mostly a strong wind, 50, 60 miles per hour. behind that is where the heat is. it's mostly here across the colorado river valley and the desert area, into the southwest. excessive heat warnings through the day from death valley towards barstow and king

conner powell seen stuff like this before. he's live with the developing details. region? >> well, certainly fits into what we've seen in the past sort of 2 1/2 hours with the arab spring. but whether or not this is like what we've seen, it's tough to say. for the first time in nearly two weeks, istanbul's historic square is now free of protesters and it is calm there. but the battle for the square was anything but peaceful. late last night, turkish riot police moved in with tear gas, water hoses and rubber bullets. that's when demonstrators began throwing molotov cocktails and rocks and the violence erupted. several thousand or so protesters that were in the square retreat to do a nearby park. that's the very site that these protests were sort of beginning several weeks ago. the turkish government wants to put in a shopping mall. but violence started and nationwide antigovernment protests took off. but the violence of the past two weeks is really not about a park, but about the future of turkey. the mainly young, secular and urban protesters believe the prime mini
