conner powell is live in gaza city with the latest. >> reporter: israel began to redeploy their troops from gaza back into israel today. we saw tanks and other carriers beginning to move across the border from gaza back into israel. this comes as the israeli military says they've pretty much wrapped up the major task of this operation, which was destroying those cross border underground tunnels, but by no means does that mean the fighting is over. here in gaza, there is still heavy fighting in parts of the gaza strip, inclouding this attack on the u.n. school. the seventh time israeli shelling has hit a u.n. school and killed civilians there seeking refuge. the u.s. calling it a disgraceful shelling. the u.n. condemning it. really the question is is whether or not israel is taking enough steps to protect the civilians in that area. the u.n. and others are saying that israel needs to do more to protect its civilians, at least ten people were killed today in this u.n. school that was hit. israeli officials say there were militants operating in that area on a motorcycle and that's who the

conner powell is joining us live now on the israeli/gaza border with the very latest. >> reporter: fort five weeks we've seen an intense conflict rage here with israeli air strikes bombarding gaza and hamas militants firing into israel. we are still seeing that today, but not nearly at the same level of intensity that we've seen in the last five weeks or so. if anything, today has been actually the quietest day of this conflict that was not a declared cease-fire. still, it has been deadly. at least five palestinians have been killed in israeli air strikes in gaza and hamas and militants continue to fire into israel. at least 28 rockets fired from gaza into israel. but the big story right now is the effort to sort of bridge some type of truce here. israeli officials are in israel and not in cairo taking part in talks, but palestinian officials are in cairo and there is an effort to bridge and build some type of cease-fire off of that 72-hour cease-fire that we had earlier in the week. both sides are saying that they don't want to intensify the fighting here, that they want to keep it so

so for the very latest, let's go to conner powell who is there at the israeli-gaza border. porter: not particularliful there was hope this 72-hour cease fire would hold. there were negotiations going on. despite the sort of brief calm here of the fighting here has resumed and the negotiations between israeli officials and palestinian officials have actually broken off just before 8:00 a.m., which was the deadline for the cease fire to be extended. israeli officials left cairo and hamas began firing back into israel. we've seen at least 30 rockets be fired from gaza into israel today. four israelis have been injured in one of those strikes. israel has responded by firing into gaza. just in the last few minutes, we've seen several strikes into gaza. big ones. at least one palestinian has been killed that we know of. but the fighting here resuming and both sides seem to be digging into their position. hamas saying until the blockade around gaza is lifted by israel and egypt, they will continue firing rockets into israel. israel saying that as long as rockets are being fired, th
