connolly. thank you for the program. guest: thank you.f i understood the thrust of the questions, it seemed to be how are we better off for having shut the government down for 16 days. my answer to that would be we are not better off. it caused great disruption to people theves, the government service. for example, $33 million a day in new small business loans from the small business administration were put on ice for 16 days. 10,000 new applications for people who reached the eligibility age for social security, and a matching number for medicare, put on ice. they could not be processed because people were furloughed. of the24,000 employees national park service, 22,000 were furloughed. the national park director, running a system of 401 parks that crosses the international date line well into the pacific ocean -- it is even bigger than continent wide -- had nine people working with him in administration headquarters because everyone else was furloughed. nobel prize winners doing scientific research, critical research, furloughed. i had

connolly: thank you, mr. speaker. i thank the distinguished ranking member and the republican manager, my good friend from maryland. mr. speaker, it's been an orwellian week in which black is white and white is black. we have people surprised that led to the closure of national parks which didn't stop some of them from berating park federal employees from enforcing the shutdown. we have other members in this orwellian week saying that the shutdown's all about respect, and we got to get something out of this. we just don't know what it is. so finally, a moment of decency. finally, we turn to the men and women who serve our country, 800,000 federal employees who are furloughed and we do something decent for them. we alleviate the angst of whether there will be that paycheck whenever we get around to reopening the government. this week, one of those dedicated civil servants of my constituency, dave, received the prestigious service to america medal in recognition of his exemplary leadership of the 6,000 person team that

it was an issue in gerry connolly's congressional race just outside of d.c. in virginia and he won. here's a senate race, governor's race and the congressional race in the west coast and east coast and midwest, where the person he was in a tight race one advocating gun control type things. so again i think it points out, the bottom want to think this is gun control was so controversial starting after the brady bill and you saw -- how did bill clinton get reelected so easily. it will be an issue in some races, it will be controversial in some races. but when i see polls, 95% american people support an expanded background checks system including 85% of gun owners and send 5% of an are a member scott i think we have an opportunity to get something done. some people say gun control doesn't work. my response is, how do we know? we haven't tried it. in this country all we have got is this background check system that does need a lot of fixing, better definition of these dangers, more records in the system, more checks going forward. that's basically all we've got. we had the assault weapo
