conor powell is monitoring all of the breaking developments from our mideast bureau in jerusalem. r. >> reporter: yeah, jon. the u.n. approving a resolution that would send u.n. monitors to aleppo to make sure that there would be no more mass atrocities according to the u.n.'s statement that came out earlier today. but these monitors will likely arrive long after this evacuation is complete for getting these civilians out of aleppo, and these monitors don't really have any ability to stop mass atrocities or to do anything other than monitor what's going on there. so it's not clear what this will actually do in terms of the overall situation in aleppo. now, the good news is that this ceasefire that has been worked on for the last week that has crumbled several times is holding right now and that thousands of people, civilians and some rebels, are able to actually leave aleppo. there's been multiple attempts at trying to get people in and out of there, tens of thousands of people have been braving cold temperatureses, lining up, waiting for these buses. these buses are now rolling, p

conor powell with more now on the crisis. >> harris, efforts to evacuate civilians have been underway for almost a week but so far they've had very little success. about 5,000 people have left aleppo in recent days but many more are desperately trying to flee the violence. thousands of civilians, including young children and the elderly, who have braved long lines and waited in freezing cold temperatures, have come under fire as they've waited for buses to take them to safety. evacuation conveys have been attacked and reportedly targeted by both pro and anti-assad forces. civilians stuck in the cross fire have been without food and medical supplies for weeks. after the assad regime in russia began the assault on aleppo. a u.n. plan would send aid and observers to syria but do little to help end the fighting and blood shed that has raged for almost six years. with aleppo now firmly in control of pro government assad forces, the syrian government along with their backers iran and russia set to expand the operation outside of aleppo in an effort to crush the opposition across the country

conor powell live in our mideast newsroom with the latest on this, conor. >> reporter: for a week nowhave been trying to get out of aleppo as part of a massive evacuation effort, tens of thousands lined up to get out, only a few thousand in the last week were able to. that's beginning to change today as the buses are rolling including 47 young syrian orphans who were seen in a video last week begging for help, begging for freedom to get out of aleppo. the u.n. now saying these children are safely out of aleppo, many of them are malnourished and in desperate need of medical help, but they are safely out. however, tens of thousands of other civilians and some rebel fighters are also trying to get out today. the buses are rolling, many lining up, braving freezing cold temperatures at night, trying to get on these green buses to take them out of aleppo. the temporary ceasefire is probably more just a small lull in the fighting. there's a real concern that the fighting is going to pick up, but these buses are moving, people are getting out. but there's a real concern that in the last week
