. >>> buyers have burned 21,000 acres, devastating a california condor sanctuary in the wilderness. the reporter kalynn conrad takes is there and shows us how researchers are trying to help the condors. >> reporter: the wildlife societies trying to locate 10 missing birds, and for condor checks. the nests were right and the path of this fire. they are hopeful that in time, they will be able to locate the animals. >> reporter: the wildlife society watch the destruction of their sanctuary as it happened. in the early hours of august 21, they lost that as well as the fire burned over the camera and the area where four chicks were in their nests. be chicks in the nest, we don't know if they made it. we are feeling encouraged, we had nests burnt over and the chicks made it. we will not be able to confirm that for a couple weeks, after things calm down and the fire zone. >> the fires burning too hot for staff to get in to check on checks, but joe burnett says he is hopeful because condors pick good places to nest. >> dominantly on the coast they use the redwoods, which are naturally fire resistant. they survive cou
