conroy, welcome back to "mad money." >> jim, thanks for having us on your show. sciences who's working so hard to get this test approved by the fda and to make it available to the public. >> that's why i want to start with, sir, we have got a big debate in washington coming up about spending. and everyone keeps talking about medicare, holding back the cost of medicare. i've been saying that we are the united states of somewhere. it's taking up so much of the budget. your test would save fortunes, and yet here we are having to wait until 2014 for the fda. why if we are trying to rein in the cost of medicare do we have to wait for 2014? >> well, jim, i think in your introduction you really framed the problem right. let me emphasize one thing, that there are 150,000 new people every year diagnosed with colon cancer. and 75% of them are medicare patients. on average it's about $140,000 to treat a patient through death on medicare. and the cost of new drugs are skyrocketing. what the fda and cms, the medicare system, have done is something really unique. that is to wo

awareness and continue to fight and i want to thank the department heads who are here, annemarie conroy who is here. i'm glad that you're here because we will need all of your help to continue this effort. we talk about human trafficking and human trafficking awareness month which begins january eleventh, it's not about this month only. it's the opportunity for us to highlight the issue but it really is something that we ought to be working on all the time when we have the budget before us. we ought to be thinking about it when we have legislation before us, as department heads and you talk about coordination, we ought to be thinking about it. i want to thank you all for being here and i hope that you bring with you sort of a renewed dedication to deal with this issue. is something that we don't need to forget about. it is often hidden. today i want to congratulate everybody. i also want to introduce our speaker that you will be hearing from today who has an amazing story to tell. i had the opportunity to speak you little with minjang (sounds like) earlier. she has served as an inspirat

[applause] >> i do apologize for being late. the amtrak engine decided it wanted to put on the brakes and he did it by itself. i had a terrible time getting it going but here i am. as marie said, i have a very long career beginning really learning publishing at random house at a time that publishing -- i think were often referred to as the golden years but roger straus on for our strauss, charles scribner and knopf owned alfred knopf so it wasn't a joke. in fact you had enough money to go into the whole thing to begin with. but i started and my interest has always been serious fiction and nonfiction. so that is what i publish through the 60s and in the 70s i was at simon & schuster, where i first began to publish being mcewan and margaret atwood, barry unsworth and i commissioned schindler's list at that point. tom conneely always submitted to books to be published at the same time and one was perfectly wonderful and the other was i thought a clinker. i made an offer on on

francisco supervisor, what am i good friends for many years since the days of treasure island, annemarie conroy. maggie -- (indiscernible) and maureen irwin, my campaign manager another aid in my office. ahmed -- amazing people to work with. in terms of campaign structure and commitment to probably have the best team. i know that supervisor mar and supervisor yee ran hard races, but i have the best team. i am thankful to people i went to, public school, junior high, elementary, galileo high school. mr. wayne at galileo sent me a check, professors at usf, it was a humbling experience. there are so many people to thank. the last two people that i have to thank, first of all -- harris, the attorney general. she came out, stepped out there is reportedly and has been with me every step of the way. i want to thank you publicly, our great attorney general for the state of california and i want to thank the person who has demonstrated what it means to be courageous, to stand up for what is the right thing. amelia ashley ward, the publisher, she had my back and supported me and fought for me. i want to

what we could do and what we could do to help and it went from that to this because of anne marie conroy so i want to give a big round of applause to anne marie. as everybody in the room knows she's a force of nature and that's all i have to say and to futures without violence and for this beautiful facility. we got support from the school district and various people and terrific from the mayor's office and of course the mayor and the bully project. we couldn't be more grateful. from the san francisco police department from greg sir to denise flair erty and cheryl jennings and the girl friday and kept us moving all day and to the communications that we got the word out through the media and laura who kept us moving today and financial support. if you read about the justice department in the paper you know we can't pay for anything. when people come to my office quite literally i can't give them coffee. people think the government is high flying and i am here to tell you it's not true. there was support for this event and we couldn't be more grateful to the people that made this possible

afternoon and thank you for paying close attention to this issue and thank the staff and anne marie conroy for putting this together and us part of it and i will acknowledge theresa who works on my staff as chronic absteism and involved with the oakland school district and i partner with tony smith and this man brought innovation to the oakland school district which has a lot of challenges which he may go into. i won't. so i really echo what jeff said about soft or hard power but let me tell you from my standpoint. i have a nephew who was in school and was bullied and there were sexual overtones to it and the result is he left the school and i spent time working with the school and my district and it wasn't my area and educate them about what bullying meant and in the most heinous way described to them and it went no where and that gave me the lesson in life we have children that are in fear when they go to school so they don't go and my priority is to have safe schools and they can be educated and create their path to a successful future and it's a healthy environment and bullying prevent
