this investigation is going on in conjunction with the contra costa contra costa county district attorney's anne makovec kpix 5. >>> chp officers are at a santa clara home this morning after the bomb squad detonated a device in the front yard last night. kcbs radio's matt bigler is at the scene with the latest. >> reporter: frank, there's still a lot of evidence of this explosion in the front yard of this house. check it out. sandbags that were surrounding a hole that was dug by the bomb squad to explode this bomb- making material or chemicals that could be used to make a bomb. and that explosion distributed those sandbags across the front yard. here's what we know about how this all started. the chp served a search warrant at this house on humboldt in santa clara. they came across a homemade bomb or bomb-making material, something like that. they called in the bomb squad and conducted this operation. neighbors we talked to this morning said it wasn't a very loud explosion. in fact they didn't hear a secondary explosion which may tell you something about just how volatile this material was.
