the homeless count in different counties around the bay area, alameda county and contra costa counties. they saw about a 43% increase in the homeless population since 2017. we also saw increases at santa clara county as well as san francisco when it comes to this issue. i did get a chance to speak with the bay area services spokesperson about the need to address this issue in the bay area. >> these are the folks who are underserved and people that get stepped over every day, but they're just like the rest of us and everyone in this room and everybody in this state is one or two bad incidents from be like them. to take the stigma away and address them as humans is the first step. >> reporter: now, governor newsom did propose $1 billion to tackle this issue of homelessness back in may when he was talking about his budget. we're probably going to hear more details about that with this task force. we know they're going to provide more details hopefully on future meetings with this task force in the coming weeks. we're live here in oakand, pete suratos, nbc bay area news. >> thanks so much,
