as nbc's jodi hernandez reports, contra costa contra costa county fire has been hard at work trying to create a new fire break in a high risk area. a lot of this community is built, you know, on hillsides or hilltops, surrounded by trees and different types of vegetation. contra costa county fire captain brandon earhart describes what makes the rossmoor senior community such a high risk fire zone. it's basically one way in and one way out in a lot of cases. reporter. that's why calfire is zeroing in on the area thanks to a $3 million state grant. firefighters are creating a much needed fire break to protect rossmoor and parts of southern lafayette. the hope is to create a defensible space around this community, and also to limit the potential to have, you know, fires, ground fires, extend, you know, from the ground fuels, you know, into the canopy of the trees to where it gets to be, you know, such that it's even more difficult to control. when you look at the canyon down there, the fire could run right up that hill. 93 year old judy says the possibility of a large fire breaking out in

most of contra costa county is showing a pretty typical pattern.ou see that on the maps here, building through richmond, most recently highway four. we know there's going to be a slower drive. that's where the big fus is though, on the roads and on the rails. highway four eastbound. early this morning we have a deadly crash that occurred when a car went into the barrier there center divide and onto and into bart tracks there. so that's affecting the bart system. westbound is distracted and adding slowing because of all that distraction. but the biggest impact highway four has a couple of lanes blocked eastbound, but the bart system has no service between antioch and north concord. let's show you this picture that bart sent out this vehicle into the tracks. here. we're told by bart that there's damage to the third rail. that's the one that powers the system. they can't even begin to inspect and repair this rail until the vehicle is cleared after the coroner report. and as we come back to the map again, this is highway four eastbound at bailey. this

new tonight a tesla fire in contra costa county is being investigated as arson.ppened just before three this afternoon in a parking lot on arnold drive in martinez. investigators have not said how it started. the video shows flames and smoke coming out of the car's windows. firefighters responded eventually were able to get the flames out. no word on any injuries. oakland police are trying to figure out if a string of burglaries are connected. that video right there showing a car slamming the security gate at a smoke shop on san pablo avenue before at least six people run into the business. luckily, no one was hurt, but that was just one of three burglaries that happened overnight. the first one happened at the extra mile gas station at 17th and castro streets, and the second at the safeway at the ridge shopping center. and the final one was at the smoke shop. in all three cases, the thieves broke down the door before taking off with a cash register and other items. police are asking anyone with information to call them. and a safeway worker is being credited for

now, contra costa county prosecutors say they've charged mueller with kidnaping three victims for ransom near san ramon in 2015. they say he managed to get tens of thousands of dollars from them in exchange for their release. the victims had kept quiet all these years for fear of retribution. this latest case in contra costa county happened a month after mueller drugged and kidnaped denise huskins in vallejo, raped her in the south lake tahoe cabin and terrorized her now husband. vallejo police had branded the couple liars, saying they made up the attack. mueller is serving 40 years in federal prison and 31 years concurrently in state prison in the vallejo case. the da says mueller's m.o. was similar to what happened in the south bay cases. authorities are crediting the work of seaside police chief nick borges, seen here with huskins and quinn in march at a training session for police across the state. the couple urged law enforcement not to fall victim to tunnel vision in solving a case. it was chief burgess who began writing to mueller in prison. authorities say mueller made admissions
