contra costa last night. it burned through part of the building from the back. it was controlled at 10 p.m. he cause is under investigatio n. >>> in contra costa county, authorities are trying to figure out the cause of several car fires. kpix 5's jessica flores reports from walnut creek. >> reporter: kenny, there were two car fires overnight back- to-back minutes apart. we're here in walnut creek on leroy lane and you can see the car that was burned-out behind me. it's completely black obviously unsalvageable. that car has burned down right in front of the home on the driveway just feet away from that occupied home. firefighters worked to put out the flames and quickly called arson investigators to the scene. they took pictures of the vehicle and as they worked on the fire, another one started about a mile away in lafayette. the second fire broke out in lafayette engulfing a white suv. both fires were sparked around midnight. both fires ripped through cars parked in driveways of occupied homes. firefighters put out the flames and no one was hurt. but now there's the question, are the two fires just a coincidence or are they the work of an arsonist ?

an arsonist could be on the loose in contra costa county. this after at least two cars went up in flames overnight.. and investigators think it was no accident. both cars were destroyed by the fires within minutes of each other. the fires follow a string of car fires in contra costa county. last year, fire crews say the county had more than 300 vehicle fires and over half of them were determined to be arson or intentionally set. fortunately fire crews were able to prevent the fires from spreading to homes.
