right now, contra costa county is hitting the ground running when it comes to vaccinating children as young as five. kpix5's justin andrews is live in contra costa county where 20,000 doses have just arrived. justin? >> reporter: which is certainly good news for parents who have been waiting to make sure their kids are protected from covid- 19. i have been talking to doctors who say more and more kids are catching covid and they say the vaccine is certainly a line of defense. there are about 95,000 kids 5 h 11 years old in contra costa county and they want to make sure most if not all get the covid shot. beginning today, you can bring your kids to a vaccination site in antioch, concord, or richmond. and your children will get the kids' version of the pfizer vaccine which is about one- third the dosage given to teens and adults. doctors say they will get two doses roughly three weeks apart for their maximum protection. contra costa county says other health care providers and pharmacies in the area are stocking up and will be able to take shots to kids very soon. the health officer said

what is it that makes you and your fellow health officials there in contra costa county, comfortable lifting the mask requirements in those particular settings. that we've seen a decrease in our case rates throughout our county decreasing hospitalizations, and we felt that they've fallen enough to really feel comfortable. um and knowing the vaccination works really well and protecting everyone, um, covid-19 to kind of lift the masking mandate or requirement in certain situations for vaccinated individuals. as you mentioned, it's in situations. other offices, gyms, fitness centers, higher education, so college classrooms or maybe some other organized gatherings as long as everyone is fully vaccinated. and the setting can be controlled. and so, uh, the public doesn't enter the setting. and uh, individual aren't fully vaccinated wouldn't be attending and come across the rare by. has not yet met the criteria to relax the masking rules in more settings like what we're seeing in marin county. can i ask you what happens, though? if you ease the mass requirements in these particular settings,

so, yeah, contra costa county was ahead of the game. they pre ordered thousands of pfizer's covid-19 vaccine doses and they are ready for these kids to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated county officials said earlier this week that they are expected to receive about 20,000 of those doses. and that doesn't even include the local pharmacies and other healthcare providers. the department is working with local schools and have health care centers like kaiser and john mair to host a vaccine clinics at schools. however, no dates havi been set in stone, but parents were able to start making appointments yesterday for kids to get their shot today at a certain sites. the attrition agree that there's still a chance your child ends up being part of the 30% of kids that get sick even though they did not have underlying health conditions. so pediatricians and other health care experts are really pushing for kids to get vaccinated. here's what they had to say. >> doesn't care about your police. doesn't care about your sister, status cover the co

contra costa county restricted the sale of flavored tobacco to e-cigarettes in the unincorporated partsf the county. >> in the east bay. we have 7 people now hospitalized after a major 2 car crash in concord. we have video showing the damage from that wreck which happened early sunday morning. you can make it out there in the distance. here's a closure closer shot. this was at the intersection of willow pass road and port chicago highway 3 victims hurt so bad they had to be taken to hospital via helicopter. the other 4 were taken in an ambulance unclear how bad those injuries are, what types of injuries there are. but clearly it's serious. police still trying to figure out exactly what caused this crash. so we'll keep you updated meanwhile, deadly crashes in general have gone up a lot this year across the u.s. the u.s. department of transportation says more than 20,000 people have died in accidents within the first 6 months of the year. the department says that deadly car accidents are also up about 18% in this period compared to last year. this represents the largest 6 month increase i

. >>> in contra costa county, one restaurant refusing to check the vaccination status of customers as required by the health department. nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live outside of lumpy's in antioch. you spoke with the owner? >> briefly off camera the owner of lumpy's diner in antioch says there's a lot of misinformation about the restaurant. she politely declined my offer to set the record straight. she doesn't want more publicity. there is a small crowd. he did tell the "east bay times" lumpy's diner is not checking indoor diner vaccination status out of respect for her customers even though it is required by the local health department. the icu health services confirmed lumpy's has been fined three times for $1750. this is for two violations back in september and a third in late october. fuds ruckers another restaurant in concord fined $250, similar violation. in and out burger in pleasant hill fined $1750. had its health permit suspended before reopening for takeout and drive-through only. in and out in san ramon and pinnal $250 each. with regard to lumpy's we don't know
