as nbc's jodi hernandez reports, contra costa contra costa county fire has been hard at work trying to create a new fire break in a high risk area. a lot of this community is built, you know, on hillsides or hilltops, surrounded by trees and different types of vegetation. contra costa county fire captain brandon earhart describes what makes the rossmoor senior community such a high risk fire zone. it's basically one way in and one way out in a lot of cases. reporter. that's why calfire is zeroing in on the area thanks to a $3 million state grant. firefighters are creating a much needed fire break to protect rossmoor and parts of southern lafayette. the hope is to create a defensible space around this community, and also to limit the potential to have, you know, fires, ground fires, extend, you know, from the ground fuels, you know, into the canopy of the trees to where it gets to be, you know, such that it's even more difficult to control. when you look at the canyon down there, the fire could run right up that hill. 93 year old judy says the possibility of a large fire breaking out in

in contra costa county, jodi hernandez nbc, bay area news. well, more money for wildfire relief is heading to l.a. county. governor newsom signing a $2.5 billion fire relief package. state leaders also approving another $4 million to help the local government rebuild homes, and an additional $1 million focused on supporting schools. the governor says he expects the state will be reimbursed by the federal government. firefighters are making progress down south the hughes fire, which started yesterday north of santa clarita. that's near magic mountain. it's 10,000 acres burned now and 24% contained. the palisades fire, 72% contained. and the eaton fire near pasadena is now 95% contained. there is another source of money and support for fire victims. venture capitalists in southern california and here in the bay area are stepping up thelp. vcs, as you know, are known for raising a lot of money and quickly. and that's needed down south. they're also known for putting money to work in the form of companies, and those companies are now helping as we

sooji nam went out to contra costa county where firefighters are taking preemptive actions to mitigate the danger in fire prone areas. >> reporter: captain brandon earhart of the contra costa county fire protection district is working along his firefighters in the rossmoor neighborhood as crews burn piles of wood on steep terrain by these houses, managing fuel on the ground to prevent vegetation dense areas like these from becoming targets to wildfires. >> basically they're using drip torches to aid in ignition. we put in some scratch line around each pile. try to eliminate a lot of the dead and dying fuel that's on the ground. that would serve as a ladder fuel to carry fire into the canopy of the trees. >> reporter: fire season typically starts between may and june, but preparing for the next fire season actually begins a year before. >> these piles were constructed probably 12 months ago. >> reporter: through the lafayette walnut week shaded fuel break project, fire crews work through about 268 acres along 11 miles of open terrain in the east bay. >> really since we had the paradise

the contra costa county sheriff says 27 year old diego vazquezgomez illegally made and sold different types of firearms, including assault weapons and short barreled rifles. investigators say his arrest is in connection to a shooting at an rv park during the contra costa county fair that injured a man and sent a bullet into a home across the street. a man has been arrested in connection to a fire at an historic mansion in northern california. officers with the california state parks department announced today. 30 year old kevin carlson was arrested thursday after they say he set fire to the bidwell mansion in chico on december 11th. the victorian mansion was built in the 1860s by john bidwell, who founded chico. carlson is now facing several charges. a popular pizzeria in benicia is reeling after the former bookkeeper was arrested on embezzlement charges. 42 year old jessica rose carpino, a mother of three, is accused of stealing at least $141,000 from pizza pirate. carpino was first hired eight years ago. we spoke with the former restaurant owner, patrick abshire, who who owned pizza

now, contra costa county prosecutors say they've charged mueller with kidnaping three victims for ransom near san ramon in 2015. they say he managed to get tens of thousands of dollars from them in exchange for their release. the victims had kept quiet all these years for fear of retribution. this latest case in contra costa county happened a month after mueller drugged and kidnaped denise huskins in vallejo, raped her in the south lake tahoe cabin and terrorized her now husband. vallejo police had branded the couple liars, saying they made up the attack. mueller is serving 40 years in federal prison and 31 years concurrently in state prison in the vallejo case. the da says mueller's m.o. was similar to what happened in the south bay cases. authorities are crediting the work of seaside police chief nick borges, seen here with huskins and quinn in march at a training session for police across the state. the couple urged law enforcement not to fall victim to tunnel vision in solving a case. it was chief borges who began writing to mueller in prison. authorities say mueller made admissions

those attacks happened in both san francisco and contra costa county. today, in court, de la quadra agreed to plead guilty to six counts of felony assault and six counts of misdemeanor sex assault. he was facing multiple charges of rape. one of the victims was in court today, while five others listened via zoom. i feel relieved a little bit. it feels surreal. i am grateful that he had to plead guilty and not no contest. so to hear him say guilty was a relief. it was validating and very emotional for sure. joining me now is hilda gutierrez. six years to catch him or prosecute him. that's a really long time and also gives length for multiple women to be assaulted, which is what you found. why did it take so long? what's the backstory on this? yeah, so what we're finding out is that the pieces of the puzzle were not connected from the very beginning. it seemed like there were several victims that came forward since 2018, but it took this victim from 2023 to really push prosecutors and to push the detective to investigate the case. there were victims that w

now, contra costa county prosecutors say they've charged mueller with kidnaping three victims for ransom near san ramon in 2015. they say he managed to get tens of thousands of dollars from them in exchange for their release. the victims had kept quiet all these years for fear of retribution. this latest case in contra costa county happened a month after mueller drugged and kidnaped denise huskins in vallejo, raped her in the south lake tahoe cabin and terrorized her now husband. vallejo police had branded the couple liars, saying they made up the attack. mueller is serving 40 years in federal prison and 31 years concurrently in state prison in the vallejo case. the da says mueller's m.o. was similar to what happened in the south bay cases. authorities are crediting the work of seaside police chief nick borges, seen here with huskins and quinn in march at a training session for police across the state. the couple urged law enforcement not to fall victim to tunnel vision in solving a case. it was chief burgess who began writing to mueller in prison. authorities say mueller made admissions
