i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street looks like we're going to open just flat, a little bit to the upside, after the s&p 500 just barely eeked out a gain for the week last week, making it three straight weeks of gains. stocks rising on friday, despite the fact the march jobs report came in just shy of economists forecasts. but the previous report was revised upward quite a bit. meantime, investors are watching the bond market, particularly u.s. treasuries. there is a sign that a lot of people look to that is a potential recession signal and it's the way the yields stick up, the interest rates stick up between the two and ten year. normally the two is lower the ten the higher. last week we saw the yield on the two year treasury move higher than the ten year. when that happens for a sustained amount of time, that is something that people see as a recessionary indicator. it hasn't happened since 2019. it doesn't mean it's going to happen necessarily, but historically when it happens you sometimes see a recession

i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. we've got the futures right now pointing to what looks like a higher open on wall street as investors continue to look at the latest inflation data. the consumer price index yesterday indicating an 8.5% increase year-over-year in march. that is the highest level of inflation since back in 1981 and that's fueling concerns about bigger interest rate hikes from the federal reserve as we move forward and a number of federal reserve speakers have indicated that they think they should move faster. most of the increase in cpi was due to gas prices and grocery prices last month, but some folks are wondering if we're getting near a peak because some of the things driving inflation have started to stabilize like used cars. stocks were higher through much of the day yesterday, but just slumped into the close. theow down 87 points at the end of the day, the nasdaq and s&p 500 slipping fractionally. this morning we're going to get the report on producer prices, a read on inflation at the wholesale

i thank chris coombs for his leadership, securing the senate's unanimous support for passage of this important legislation earlier this month. i'm proud to lead the legislation here in the house along with our bipartisan co-sponsors, congresswomen lisa blunt rochester and eleanor holmes norton and congressman bob good. as a former teacher of history and a student of history, i believe in the value of learning from our past. many americans don't know that the landmark brown v. board of education supreme court decision that desegregated public schools in 1954 combined legal challenges from four states and the district of columbia. i represent one of those states. and was fortunate to know some of the petitioners from carolyn county, south carolina who challenged the separate but equal laws. many of their photographs hang in my congressional office. in 2004, i wrote in cooperation with the foundation, the book "uncommon courage," the story of south carolina's unsung civil rights bat. that same year, i was proud to lead the effort to present the congressional gold medal of honor to the l
