anna coren reporting live from hong kong. you as always. >>> let's get more on the weather conditions facing the recovery teams. meteorologist pedram javaheri joins us now from the international weather center there. and as we heard from anna, due to weather conditions, this search and recovery effort has been us suspended. can you get an idea how long they will have to wait before they can resume efforts? >> that's a great question. the visibility is a major issue. down to 10 meters at this point. you take a look at where the plane took off from. the closest storm i could find when the plane went missing is 300 kilometers away. but the clouds bank up right around the bintang mountains. that is a concern. the fog will remain in place for a couple of days. thunderstorms popped up early on monday when the sun began to rise. by the afternoon hours the clouds return. this is a pattern we'll follow the next couple days. this is the dry time of year. july and august is the peak of dry season. and the mountains still get tremendous

ana coren is live in hong kong., for years, critics of the tight control of the currency and economy, for years, critics he said let the yuan flow freely. free market reforms. now, china says it is having free market reforms and critics say it is being done because it is best for their economy and not everybody else. >> reporter: that is right, christine. they are saying we are opening it up so that obviously the yuan can be determined by those market forces rather than the central bank which has had a tight control, i should say, on chinese financial policy. really, this is being perceived by those within the markets and within the financial sector as a sign the china economy is struggling. it is weak. it is hurting. by devaluing the currency this allows exports to be much more competitive and much more cheaper on the international stage. it helps to stimulate the domestic economy as well. and this is something that china desperately needs to do. there's real question marks if the government is in control of the sl

joining us for the latest on the search is cnn's anna coren. >> reporter: good morning, christine.his makes it more crucial to find the wreckage and black boxes. the flaperon discovery confirms they are looking in the right place in the southern indian ocean. the priority zone off the coast of australia is 20,000 square miles. we know this is a slow and meticulous process. the reason being is the rough weather and also the terrain. the under water terrain. we are talking about depths of 2.5 miles. mountains, valleys, gorges underneath the ocean. that is why it is taking such a long time. as for expanding this priority search zone, no authorities have said that. as we know, australia is leading the search, but as we heard from the australian prime minister tony abbott earlier today, he believes that they owe it to the families, the 239 people on board, to keep searching for the wreckage. take a listen. >> we owe it to the hundreds of millions of people who use our skies. we owe it to the 24 million australians who use our skies. we owe it to them to ensure their travel is as safe as

we have ana coren in hong kong with the latest.are pleased to hear that. what are the chinese saying? >> reporter: the chinese are saying we are allowing market forces to play a bigger role in helping to evaluate the yuan. this is something the united states and the international monetary fund has been pushing for years. wanting china to loosen the grip on the currency exchange rates. many analysts, christine, say this is an indication of china's economy is slowing and it is weaker than what official figures suggest. they say that really this is also a sign perhaps that the administration in china, the government in china, perhaps is not in control and not managing the slowdown. by devaluing the currency, this allows exports to be cheaper and competitive on the global stage. helping to revive the domestic economy. analysts just are not really convinced to what is coming out of china anymore. that 7% growth, that forecast growth for this year, many analysts skeptical that will be reached and figures are believable. particularly now

i want to bring in anna coren from hong kong.hey are trying to get a hold of the situation but, in the end, is there really a quick fix to the problem which is china's economy? >> reporter: good question, alison. i think the showdown series is a real problem with china's economy. we have been knowing this for quite sometime despite the fact that china is claiming their economy is sound. it clearly is hurting. property is hurting. the stock market is hurting. we know that growth is weak. that is certainly what are seeing from the economic data that is being coming out of china. there was that mass sell-off that began in june and it just really hasn't stopped. before that, you have to remember the shanghai composite was up 60% and all of those gains in the first half of the year have now just evaporated. china's 7% growth this year is highly unlikely, the critics say, that is just not achievable. then, as you say, those measures last night, which really they were forced to do because of that major sell-off this week, the shanghai c

anna coren joins us live with more on all of this.e should note this is an important day for relatives of victims from mh370. we could get confirmation but just update us on how many nations will be represented and i guess what we can call the flaperon investigation room. >> reporter: in that lab in france, which is where these officials will gather local time this afternoon they will be analyzing that wing part known as a flaperon. this is the start of this investigation. this analysis is to determine whether or not it is part of mh370. many people believing that is it but until we have those definitive answers, still is a piece of wreckage but it's what we do know is that it is part of a boeing 777 that was found on reunion island 3,700 kilometers from that search area that is being carried out in the indian ocean off the coast of western australia. that search is still continuing. it's the french leading this investigation. this analysis, they're joined by the malaysians and they have invited an australian expert. it's the australi

anna coren is following developments from hong kong and joins us now with more.r other nations as we are seeing reflected in some global markets. can we expect this or are some people calling this a currency war. is this what is playing out? >> reporter: some analysts say that currency war has been underway for some time. others believe that the currency would have to drop a great deal more for it to be officially declared a war. you mention this is good for china. it's definitely good for their exports. there's no doubt about that. it makes their exports cheaper and more competitive on the global stage but many analysts, rosemary, are saying that this is really an indication that the chinese economy is hurting, that it's slowing and that the official figure is not a clear indication of what is actually happening on the mainland. we know that consumer confidence is down and they've been relying on that to pick up the slack, if you like with constructions ailing, financial services which were riding off the back of the stock market, they're also slipping somewhat.

i want to go now to anna coren in hong kong. which items have washed up on shore? >> reporter: malaysian officials are saying it's their teams on the ground at reunion island that have discovered part of a window and also part of seating cushion that they believe may be linked to mh370. however, i think it's important to stress that french authorities have not confirmed this. so there seems to be some discrepancy about what has happened to these items, as to whether they've been sent on. apparently they've not yet been sent to france where that flaperon and part of a suitcase are being analyzed at separate labs the flaperon in toulouse and the suitcase at another lab. we know that french military planes are involved, helicopters and a land search. reunion island is part of france, a french territory. but the search has been expanded to madagascar. all authorities in that region are on high alert to any debris that may be linked to mh370. but really the only item that has been confirmed as part of mh370 is that flaperon and that confirmation coming from the malaysia

anna coren joins us with more.is a lot of concern, isn't there? talk to us about what people are saying across japan about the restarting of the sendai nuclear power plant. >> reporter: as we know, there is a great deal of opposition in japan about restarting these nuclear reactors. across the country, the reason being is that they fear what nuclear power could bring considering the disaster in 2011 with the fukushima daiichi power plant, the meltdown that triggered radiation leaks. and still today there is leaking water that is radioactive that they are obviously working furiously to contain. but it's believed that people who lived in that area will never be able to return because of the high radiation levels. now a recent poll, rosemary, found that more than a half of those who were questioned oppose the restart of nuclear reactors across the country. as you say, this one in sendai has been restarted as of this morning. there are 43 across the country. there is a second nuclear reactor on that sendai site in sout

anna coren is following those negotiations from hong kong and joins us live to talk about them.at these talks are being held itself is encouraging but any word yet on what is being achieved or if the meeting has everyone ended? >> we have called to the blue house in seoul and panmunjom village. it's a marathon effort by both sides. it perhaps shows there is no breakthrough at this stage which is anticipated. these things normally take days to reach some sort of a resolution. but we're getting mixed messages. the south korean defense ministry is saying that pyongyang has moved 70% of their submarines off bases and doubled artillery along the dmz. as far as they are concerned that is an antagonistic stance and see this as the north korean trying to buy some leverage for these negotiations. the south koreans are holding military exercises with the americans. it's something they do every year. there are 80,000 troops involved. they are high-tech weaponry and resources and troops at their disposal. but park geun-hye came out demanding an apology from the north koreae north koreans fo

an anna coren is covering the latest from hong kong. talk about the debris.ther item but it's they haven't been sent on to france for investigators to look at. why is that? >> reporter: rosemary, we just don't know. obviously last week, malaysian authorities said they found this extra debris on reunion island. they obviously have teams on the ground there, as you say, part of a window, as well as a cushion -- see cushion that they think may be linked to the missing plane. now, french authorities seem to contradict this saying that they were unaware of this new debris and it certainly had not been sent to france for further analysis. but the malaysians insist that this debris needs to be looked at. and as result, obviously, authorities there taking the search much more seriously. they are expanding it. we know that the french military have sent out planes to scour the ocean. there are obviously land searches on the island and naval boats as well that are looking offshore. now apart from reunion island which drift models show that if there is debris coming from
