. >> reporter: racing is in corey smith's dna. at least it was.e says he's retired now, after a lifetime spent chase the adrenaline rush behind a steering wheel. walk me through it, how old were you when you started racing? >> i've been doing this since i was 12 years old, racing. i'm 38 years old now. >> reporter: the ex-street racer spend is his days under the hood, souping up cars. what makes a car a racing car? >> okay. for example, this car right here has come with original 305 motor, a small motor. now it has a corvette motor. >> reporter: this chevy 1987 monte carlo aero coupe, a small step down from the super cars on the streets today. >> pretty much gave it up. the cars now, extremely fast on the street. very dangerous. i mean, it's wild. i mean, got too much to lose. >> how do you wean yourself off of a drug like street racing? >> it's hard. know what i mean? like i say, you can be in a car that makes some horsepower, i mean, you want to punch it from time to time to time, i mean, it's just something you got to realize when you get older

corey smith on behalf of the housing action coalition. i really want to extend our appreciation for the entire staff pulling a report together. i and other members of my team took part in some of these community workshops, and it is a different attitude than how we're seeing planning happening anywhere else in the bay area. a couple of points. number one, while it was good to see the number of homes built in 2020 uptick slightly, we are still, year over year, falling short of our figure of 5,000 homes provided by the mayor's office every year. we are calling on the feds to increase funding with the new h.u.d. director and hoping that the state can take a more active role, but there's also opportunities to increase the regulatory process. i live not too far from the 730 stannion site, and i think we're on meeting number six over a multiple year process, and it's frustrating that it's taking so long to build new homes for people, both market rate and 100% affordable. really great presentation, taking a look i am look solution, and really ap

corey smith on behalf of the housing action coalition in support of the proposal in front of you today. we had previously shared our report card for the project, and so i do not want to reiterate those points, but a couple of additional items. number one, we absolutely need more family housing in san francisco, and we absolutely need more middle-income housing in san francisco, and we absolutely need more housing of all times for transitional age youth and housing for seniors. it all comes down to the problem that we don't have enough housing for the people that want to live here, so adding housing is incredibly important. when we have a proposal that will provide middle-income housing because of the design with no subsidy, then that's really a win-win. we're aiming projects with the intent of subsidizing it, and that's good, but when we have the opportunity to do so at no cost to taxpayers, we cannot let that opportunity pass. next thing i want to share is i shared a petition with you previously. 45 additional names in support of the project. 40 of those names indicated they lived in
