nbc's cori coffin is in glendale, arizona, near phoenix. good morning.ter area is the capital right now of covid? >> i think a lot of residents are asking that question as well, kendis, and good morning. a lot of medical professionals we spoke to say they think there's a lot of things compounding here. there's folks coming into the state that typically come in during the winter. they are the elderly residents trying to get out of the colder states. also not a statewide mask mandate and even though in maricopa county there is one and there is one in other cities there isn't one cohesive response from the state in regard to that. many of the medical professionals we spoke to want to see that and they feel that that is one of the biggest issues. they are also concerned about what's coming up when it comes to holiday travel and the fact it has gotten so bad here right now. they say it's even going to get worse in january. matter of fact, we spoke to a surge physician. he is one of those folks who worked in an office and has come back onto the front lines bec

msnbc's cori coffin is in queens. had to postpone some 22,000 vaccines this week. >> reporter: yeah, it's a horrific timeline to think about, lindsey. some 22,000 postponements to the following week. and if this issue persists, that means it's going to continue to push back thousands of other appointments and have a horrible domino effect for the city. and then, of course, you have these mass vaccination sites opening up, like here at the aqueduct racetrack where we're at in queens. we were out at jones beach last week. so, what gives, basically? what's the deal with these mass vaccination sites opening up? the state of new york really ramping up their vaccination efforts, but yet, there's just not enough supply coming in. mayor de blasio spoke to that recently. >> we believed the supply would increase over time, as more and more production was ramped up. and what we found was, it leveled off just when we were able to do more and more vaccinations is when things leveled off. >> reporter: and then you, of course, have

i'm joined by democratic senator cory booker of new jersey. and senator booker, there's so much on our plate as a country, so much on your plate at the united states senate. so, the first question, when should we expect this trial to start and be done with? >> well, i think to get technical off the bat, there's some frustrations about getting time lines set. you need the republican leader to cooperate in terms of time agreements, but i fully expect it to happen as quickly as possible, and i think what's also is going to happen is we'll do a lot of things at once. i think we should, if we can get the time agreements from our republican leader, we can actually hold impeachment trials as well as do other urgently critical things, like getting key national security personnel confirmed as well. >> is there -- it's interesting you say it that way. so, what you're saying is, this is an issue with the senate parliamentarian. this is mitch mcconnell. he is yet to agree on a timeline? >> you know, i talked again to senator schumer last night about the s

cori, good morning to you. growing, growing situation there in arizona, and they still do not have a statewide mask mandate. >> reporter: yeah, it's fascinating. and a lot of health care workers tell me that that's the reason they believe me that is the rea believe these number have ballooned so extraordinarily in the winter, especially after a major surge in the summer that they had, and they say they're now even worse, forecasting just grim times for january and february, surpassing the czech republic, as the czech republic is the country with the highest per capita rate in the world and arizona has easily surpassed that. in maricopa county, the infection rate is 18.9%, almost 20% of cases testing positive. icu beds, especially at banner health, the largest hospital system at zero percent in much of the state. take a listen what one health care expert had to say for arizona right now. >> the forecast for arizona, and specifically for banner health hospitals is actually very grim and the next couple of weeks a

msnbc's cori coffin is in queens. so, cori, governor cuomo has gone as far as sending a letter to pfizer saying, please, can we just buy vaccines from you, direct? >> he -- he -- he really has tried to take the reigns here. and we saw this, earlier in the year, throughout this pandemic. trying to get more control, since there wasn't really a big, federal plan that was put into place that was successful. unfortunately, pfizer said, you know, that's going to be up to the federal government to allow states to do that. it could cause some other issues and for some states to be bidding against each other. it's likely not going to happen. but, the city, the city of new york had to cancel some 22,000 appointments, recently. they have to bump those back until they get more supplies in. and -- and, you know, we're out here at mass-vaccination sites. we are at the racetrack. this was opening today. we were yesterday at jones beach. the question is how are mass-vaccination sites able to be ramped up in states like new york but y

cory coughman is outside a publix for us. what more do you know about this? >> reporter: yasmin, good afternoon. yeah, this original idea behind this pilot program was originally presented by governor ron desantis and he wanted to start in palm beach county and his whole idea was, okay, we got to get these vaccines out more quickly to seniors, 65 and older, some 4.5 million seniors. and so, you know, what better way to do it than publix? there's a lot of publix locations. the problem is his announcement was solely for publix to do the vaccinations in this county, not for any county health sites to be able to do. now, that drew a lot of outcry because county officials said, listen, this isn't a fully fleshed out plan. it is not equitable. there are not publix locations in every community. rural communities, poorer communities do not have access to this as much. so, after much discussion and much criticism, the governor has reversed his stance and now it will be a partnership between the county and publix locations, so there will be more distribution through pu

>> okay, thank you so much that, cori coffin from queens. i just heard governor cuomo saying that it had it worst than any state. i'm going to suggest that california could rival anything that new york has seen as well. i'm wedded to both places, certainly. what can you tell us about the outbreak there in the golden state? >> reporter: i was going to say, alex, california can certainly give new york a run for its money in the pain department with well over 2 million cases here. there is a little bit of cautious optimism now that that post-holiday surge we've been talking about the last few weeks may be leveling off. but then you do have individual outbreaks like the ones at the hospital behind me, the kaiser permanente medical center in san jose. you remember hearing about this right after christmas. it was started apparently by a staffer who showed up unwittingly showed up in a christmas tree costume with an air power to it and that may have spread the virus faster. some 77 staff members and more than a dozen patients infected. they do beli
