cori coffin joins from us long beach island on the jersey shore. there's a lot keeping officials there in lbi. >> reporter: there is so much going on. hurricane isaias officials have to worry about, but the rise in cases in the coming weeks. new jersey's governor said where we are right now will be fully reflected closer to a month from now. he is worried about the numbers given the spike. let's talk about the outbreak when it comes to the lifeguards. we're told 34 of 35 of the lifeguards are recovered. one is monitored for symptoms at this point according to the health department here. the latest case was reported july 24th. this is all linked to indoor parties. not only smaller indoor gatherings, but massive ones. including one that the new jersey governor phil murray had to address. take a listen about what he said. >> it was the massive house party in jackson that had an estimated 700 people in which took nearly the entire jackson township police force and state police and other jurisdictions to break up. we don't know yet how many coronavirus

. >> my co-worker/co-anchor cori coffin joins me from long beach island. you heard it right there. jersey officials are usually cracking down on the beaches throughout most summers. this year it's a little different. >> reporter: yeah. they're just increasingly frustrated because the state has worked so hard to limit the spread. the update on the 35 lifeguards. 're learning 34 of the 35 have covered, and that's according to the long beach health department. one is still being monitored for symptoms. no hospitalizations. when it comes to the reported outbreak, the last case was july 4th. beachgoers shouldn't feel too uncomfortable because they're mostly linked to indoor parties including with the lifeguards, not necessarily associated with their work outdoors. but what they're doing indoors, large and small parties. governor phil murphy had more to say. take a listen to this trend. >> i get it. we get it. we've all had our routines turned upside down the past four months and we want to blow off some steam with friends. i can't fault anyone for having that notion. and with the weathe

my co-anchor cori coffin is live in seaside heights, new jersey. people would be out and about on a beautiful summer august day like this, but while they're still expected to be out there, there's this overwhelming concern about what is going on behind the lines. >> reporter: yeah. there is this overwhelming concern from businesses, too, on how that is going to affect their busy season. right now what we're seeing, what we're reporting this week are those numbers in effect from the indoor parties and other indoor gatherings that we first told you about last weekend as those numbers continue to rise at least through next week as it does take a lag with the reporting of her to cases to come forward. out here where we're at on the jersey shore, the reason why we're out here and looking at this particular spot carefully is that's where a lot of these events are being held as more people flock to the shore for the summer. and the governor's concern is for the rebound here, especially when it comes to hurricane sandy. years ago, with we spoke to business

i appreciate that, cori coffin. joining me medical contributor dr. kavita patel. a quick question. we saw the graphic that cori coffin put up that 35 lifeguard has contracted coronavirus. 34 of whom have recovered. is that part of the problem? that you see people of a certain age or maybe, you know, physical agility in good health, they might get the disease and some will, you know, many in those conditions, you know, will recover quickly. people say, eh? >> yeah, alex, you're absolutely correct, certainly the trend lately across the country has been younger people but do not make a mistake, younger people are also still being hospitalized at higher rates than average, so, yes, you're correct that, sure, you can have a good story where many recover, but here's the problem, alex, we have no idea how many of those people that were infected and recovered spread it to other people. in the state of new jersey we know that at least for every person infected they're infecting at least 1.4 other people, which is a bad sign. >> too high. how can cities control things, though, like house par

mcaulif cori coffin is live for us. cori, do they realize they flattened the curve and now things seem to be spiking again? >> reporter: you know who notices the most, kendis? the businesses. businesses we spoke to. especially here on the coast and on the jersey shore. they rely on business for the summer to be able to sustain throughout the year. with things spiking with cases now, there is a chance they may have to shutdown again. that would be really bad for them. this is set to be a beautiful day today. in fact, boardwalk will be packed on this summer day. the outdoor paces for the businesses will likely be packed as well. they told us that they are hoping even though we are seeing the rise in cases that things start to level off with the warning bells and alarm bells that the governor has been setting since last week talking about the rise in infection rate in new jersey. they also spoke about what this has been like to try to recover from covid-19 after recovering from sandy a couple of years ago. listen to what th

we have cori coffin with more. what does this mean for individual districts, cori?reporter: this means the individual districts come up with a plan whether or not they will be fully virtual learning or some portion of virtual for the fall. the governor originally saying he wanted all 2,500 public schools to reopen in person this fall after a lot of pushback from the state's union and individual district iunions and hearing about teacher concerns. if a district qualifies, which means it has to prove it does not have ppe and ventilation and other challenges, then it can opt-in for virtual learning. that is the case in elizabeth. 375 teachers opted in. they had been immunocompromised or live with somebody who could be affected. now elizabeth will be 100% virtual learning. more and more states are doing that. this is a big win for anybody not vying for that and concerned about safety in schools this fall. it presents challenges. parents having to work and make sure kids get school. will the kids be learning properly virtually and teachers working from home as well. take

joining us now from elizabeth new jersey is cory coffin. schools will have in person instruction. only teach virtually if they can't meet certain protocols. this gives schools really own willing a few weeks to figure out their plans. what are you hearing from educators about their concerns? >> this is going to be a very quick few weeks. they are happy, though. this is a step in the right direction. not only for individual teachers and the districts. but the state teacher's union which has been advocating for this. it is not 100% virtual, it's somewhere in the middle. schools do have to show that they cannot meet the safety requirements for ppe, proper ventilation, that sort of thing. here in elizabeth where we're at, it will be virtual for this school district, they had some 375 teachers opt in, qualifying for virtual at home teaching, because they thenselves have pre-existing conditions or live with someone who would be immunocompromised. or they are dealing with the different students that may be immun immunocompromised here. i spoke with several teachers yesterday, they gave us

nbc's cori coffin is there and is in wilkes-barre, pennsylvania. it is predominantly a red state.y are hoping it will turn purple with joe biden being born just across the river from wilkes-barre. >> yeah. it's a little less red. i mean there are more registered democrats. but it did flip for trump in larger way than the state. in fact, let's bring up the information we have when it comes to the 2016 election results. pennsylvania, trump won by less than a percentage point. it was such a narrow lead there. and when it comes to luzerne county, he won by 19 points. quite a big difference there. that's mostly because of manufacturing jobs, and a lot of those manufacturing jobs have traditionally gone with voters. they had gone democrat because they're union members, and they were able to be convinced by trump when it comes to the future of their job. we have a crisis economically. we have racial injustice happening. many of these issues are taking precedence for voters. i talked with voters. listen to what they told me. >> i am a democrat. i have always voted in presidential election
