corinne wheatley, bbc news. suspended during the pandemic. john mcmanus went to watch runners in bushy park in southwest london. park run has returned and no better place to see that happen than here in bushy park in middlesex where it all began way back in 2004 with just 13 runners and a couple of volunteers. and look at it now. across the world, thousands of people take part in park run in normal times across the uk and as far afield as australia, the united states and japan, but it has been suspended in the uk since march 2020 because of the pandemic. organisers tell me they are confident that they can keep people safe while they are taking part in park run. i think you can see from what is going on around me that there is real enthusiasm for the return of this participatory free sport, the kind of sport where you are not competing against other people, you are just doing the best that you can for yourself and of course reaping all those exercise and mental health benefits as well. now it's time for a look at

corinne wheatley, bbc news.tivals weren't the only thing returning this weekend — as park run got under way again right across england. the free 5k events were due to resume onjune 5th, but were postponed by the delay of coronavirus restrictions easing. events in northern ireland are already back—up and running, while in scotland and wales, organisers are aiming to start again on august 14th. mind you, there are some parks you might not want to be running in today. because lightning has damaged homes in hampshire and severe weather warnings were put in place as the heatwave came to a dramatic end overnight. thunderstorms hit dorset, sussex and the island of guernsey. they have now stopped, but are expected to develop again later. and predicted rainfall of up to 50 millimetres per hour could lead to flooding in some southern counties of england. it was pretty chilly in london first thing this morning. let's see what the prospects are for the weekend and what is left of it. now it's time for a look at the weather
