that was the sort of corky thing about wisconsin on the rural side. bill clinton won the rural vote marginally in 1996 in wisconsin. john kerry was competitive. he lost by double digits, but joe biden lost by twice as much as john kerry. so things have changed. things have also changed on the suburban side. these three counties that are read on the 22 -- 2004 map were a lot more republican than most suburban counties outside of northern cities. they were so republican that when you factor in turnout, they were arguably the best performing republican counties in the country. they turned out at incredible rates and republicans generated landslides there. they were also routinely the most republican counties in wisconsin. they were so republican that the milwaukee metropolitan area which is made up of blue milwaukee county and these three republican counties that collectively the milwaukee metropolitan area was more republican than the state as a whole. this was a major metropolis. it was carried by george bush twice. all that has changed since 2016. now metro milwau
