[applause] with cornell as we all know is another national and international icon and in national treasure in his own right. he is a professor of civil rights activists philosopher, human rights activist who and really one of the boldest public intellectuals that we have in the united states today. he speaks truth to power even when when he speaks is unpopular he has the structure to be critical and against the grain even when it's hurt him and is standing in the black community. so cornell's latest book is the rich and the rest of us and we are proud and happy to have him here today. [applause] next we have fred harris, who is professor of political science at columbia university where he directs the institute for research and african-american studies. [applause] professor harris's latest book is the price of the ticket, barack obama and the rise and decline of black politics and professor harris is one of the leading scholars of african-american politics in the united states today.

a cornell dropout. yeah, the word is a complete mess of contradictions. it's one of the gnarliest words. in fact, one of the difficulties i have is trying to figure out what the damn word means. it means to love. it comes from latin, you know, from the french version; right? it means to do something out of love, not out for money. that's the most basic. in europe, it has a very specific and narrowceps of just being -- sense of just being a non-professional; right? here, if you look it up in the dictionary, we say -- if i said to you they are an amateur art collector, you would not think they are a bad art collector, but a good one. if they were a rank amateur, you know that person is bad at something. if i say somebody's, you know, amateurish, that means they are novice. it can mean greenhorn, boob, or connoisseur here. part of the reason the word has some conflicting meaning is precisely because americans feel conflicted about our real amateur status. there's a riff in there why we love awards, grants, and we love to be sort of recognized because we real

i'm a huge fan of cornell. i got involved with the cornell review because i think on what is my first days on canopy as they went to a student activities fair and picked up an issue and read a number of the articles and i just thought they were excellent. we had some -- during their freshman years we had the car now conservative publication. we had such incredible writers. at the time, i didn't necessarily identify myself as a conservative. i certainly wasn't registered as a republican, but i was very inspired but i got involved and there is a small group of people to conservatives ideas on the cornell campus. i quickly ended up with more and more responsibilities. so i think during my second week on the paper i became the vice president. and so is very flattering, but it was all so i think a very -- it was a very clever way of recruiting people. each of them fancy titles and lots of things to do. so during my four years at cornell, i was involved with the paper. i very much enjoyed it. i thought that debating
