cornell barnard has the story. >> reporter: a routine training exercise for firefighters quickly became a rescue mission on the water. this firefighter still wet standing in his bare feet was one of six firefighters thrown into the pacific. it happened during that training exercise near the cliff house. seven firefighters aboard a 30-foot rescue fire boat when they got into trouble. >> conditions were pretty calm, as i understand it. there was a big wave that came up. some might call it a rogue wave and flipped the boat. >> reporter: all firefighters tossed into the chilly water. first responders on jet skis were nearby but rescuing everybody wasn't easy. >> the jet ski came to get one swimmer, or person in the water. the person grabbed on and the waves were breaking and the jet ski had to leave him and bounced off a couple of waves and ultimately came back and pulled a couple of people back. >> were you worried? >> we thought maybe somebody wise trapped on the rocks. >> reporter: sky 7 hd was over land's end where the boat drifted. >> we've had some of our most experienced firefighters

abc news reporter cornell barnard is there with the very latest. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, this gas station is closed until further notice. just take a look at the extensive damage from the fire after a paratransit van caught fire here today. the van was just towed away. now, many witnesses started rolling their cell phone cameras when they heard the explosions. flames and explosions heard as the 25-passenger paratransit van caught fire about 2:30 today. here's another angle of the fire at the chevron station at 9th and howard. the fire department says no passengers were on board. the driver pulled into the station because he was having engine problems. sky hd was overhead. the smoke could be seen for miles. now, the driver said that the engine was overheating. he walked into the station looking for a mechanic. moments later the fire started. manager of the nearby burger king told everyone to get out. >> and from there it just got bigger and bigger, reached the ro roof. my other manager, myself, got everybody out of here to get past the line down there fo

cornell? >> reporter: just got an update from the fire department here at station 47. four firefighters were taken to the hospital. one will remain overnight. after suffering hypothermia. an investigation is underway after first responders found themselves in need of rescue. a routine training exercise for firefighters quickly became a rescue mission on the water. this firefighter still wet, standing in his bare feet, was one of six firefighters treason into the pacific. it happened during the training exerciser in theliffhouse. seven firefighters aboard a 30-foot rescue fire boat when they got into trouble. >> conditions were calm. there was a big wave that came up. somebody called a rogue wave. and flipped the boat. >> first responders on jet skis were nearby but rescue everyone wasn't easy. >> the jet ski came to get one swimmer, or person in the water. the person grabbed on and all of a sudden a set came and the waves were breaking and the gentlemen ski had to level but came back and pulled a couple people out. >> worried? >> we were. we thought maybe somebody was
