his name is walter cornell. most called him cornell. he was a member of the 6th recommendingment.illed day two of the battle here in belleau wood. but that's not really for me the interesting part of the story. that's the factual side of it. what was interesting is that gunner cornell, all of the young marines in his company, looked to him for leadership. u.s. marines at that point, it was an all-volunteer force. most had never seen combat before. not this guy. this guy had been around the world -- literally. fighting under the flag. he had been in china, he had been all over the place, all these little islands, as the marine corps before 1917, again they were doing constable for ships and security, bayside, all of that. walter cornell's story for me or gunner cornell as he was known to the young marines, this his story for me is that he showed leadership in the first few days of combat when the young marines were looking to somebody for direction. looking for leadership. what it comes down to is he was a marine sniper. long-range rifle fire. very effective, he would come in every

cornell >> reporter: dan, we have breaking news we need to talk about. a huge grass fire has erupted just in the last 20 minutes. this is happening off of interstate 80 here just outside the fairfield city limits. this is the east side of the i-80 freeway. not far fromry glen road. we have been seeing big flames. lots of black smoke in the area. we have also seen lots of fire trucks making their way to the scene, which appears to be burning in mostly open space. but there are homes not far from here. we are waiting to see whether any air tankers will show up to douse some of the flames, which continue to burn especially here off to the right. now, this is all happening just across the freeway from where this deadly chp accident has been under investigation all day. we're told just in the last five minutes all lanes of west bound 80 have just reopened after being shut down for really most of the day for the investigation. we do have sky 7 video of what the scene looked like. there was epic traffic backups most of the day, traffic stretching back as far as

. >> cornell barnard is live at oakland's mcarthur bart station with more on that. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, kristen and dan, just hours after her emotional funeral, a peaceful prayer rally is expected to take place here outside the mcarthur bart station to honor and remember nia wilson. this, of course, is the spot where so many vigils have taken place over the last few days and weeks. a memorial continues to grow here in her honor. as you know, the 18-year-old was killed on july 22nd in an unprovoked attack on a bart platform as she left the bart train. her sister was also stabbed. she survived. 27-year-old john cowell was charged with the crime. police have not determined a motive in the case. but many believe it to be racially motivated. we are seeing a few people who attended today's funeral starting to gather here outside of the macarthur bart station where this memorial is really vry -- just astounding. in fact, the memorial continues to grow on -- outside another pillar just outside the station here. the memorial -- the vigil, actually, is supposed to begin at 5:00
