joining me now is a student at cornell, damien jackman. he's also the former national student union president. damian, thank you so much for joining us this evening. we all heard about the statements that were made, the threats. it was just so unbelievable. i mean, your family -- grandfather is a holocaust survivor and here we are in 2023, at your college, there were just calls to shoot jewish students at a building that contains cornell suit center for jewish living. there are also calls to jewish women, to be head jewish babies in front of their families. the rhetoric, the statements unbelievable. do you feel safe on your campus tonight? >> first off, laura, thank you so much for having me and thank you for allowing league share my experiences to the world. just say i feel safe would be, i'm not sure i would be able to say that. i know that my friends and my other classmates do not feel safe on campus. they've been using buddy systems to go from class to class. some of them did not attend classes today, they requested zoom links so they

en masse to support jewish students and jewish life at cornell as they are for all students at cornell. >> i mean, the fact is to that point, where many students, they need that, they need that as a precaution, and, molly, you spoke with the governor of new york, kathy hochul. do you feel that school officials, do you feel that elected officials are doing everything they need to do to protect you and other students? >> yes. governor hochul and the president ensured they are doing everything they can, and we have every type of police outside of our building 24/7 to make sure we are safe. we cannot express our appreciation any more. >> molly, have you been surprised in the wake of the attack on october 7th and what has transpired since then, the war between israel and hamas? have you been surprised by the level of anti-semitism that it has displayed, that it has revealed? >> unfortunately, we've been in a world where jewish students on campus have been under attack for many, many decades and have been feeling extremely unsafe. but i never would have expected this to happen on my own camp

this cannot be what defines us at cornell.et we have a list of colleges and universities across the country where this is being tolerated. what do you say to presidents at those universities? >> that tolerating such hate and discrimination against jewish people is a direct violation of free speech and freedom of expression and students should be able to walk around campus and talk about their opinions and should not be able to hurt other people and prevent them from living their lives and getting an education which is one of our rights in this country. >> john: we see a crawl of all of those universities in which the anti-israeli, anti-semitic protests are taking place. then there was this situation in russia over the weekend at an airport where people rushed the terminal and even the tarmac trying to get at people who they believed had just landed on a flight from tel aviv. i want to put this out, too. protests at colleges across the country as well ostensibly in support of the palestinian people but anti-israeli and anti-sem

do you feel safe at cornell right now and if not, why? >> i mean, definitely yesterday as i was coming out, definitely not -- we appreciate governor hochul coming. we appreciate what the university president happens been doing. we want to stress this is not just a one and done conversation. something that we have to continue dialogue with the university internally as a student body. we have to make sure it's a safe campus for jews or anyone otherwise. >> martha: do you have options to people protesting on behalf of the palestinian people or do you draw the line between that and people who are protesting -- we saw in new york, people marching at nyu with signs that say please keep the world clean. do you draw a distinction between these two things? >> we've always been a proponent to healthy dialogue. this is not isolated. this is happening in other universities, cooper union, tulane. one of our beliefs is that we encourage this dialogue. some of these demonstrations are toeing the line between anti-zionist statements and anti-israel state
