cornell belcher is a democratic pollster who also worked with barack obama's campaign. republican strategist bruce haynes has advised the republican national committee. nice to see you both. >> thanks for having us. soledad: let's jump right into it. the debate itself had sections. what was interesting to me was that there was literally zero discussion of latinos in any of those categories. why do you think that was, and what else was missing? cornell: if you look at what he did it, it actually probably heard him with latinos because , of the conversation where he talked about miss universe as a housekeeper, right, talking about her weight. so he arguably hurting himself with latinos, and he also hurt himself even more with women. campaign was pulling out their hair. i don't understand how he expanded his tent. bruce: this was an opportunity for donald trump. he has taken a lot of criticism on his immigration policy being too hard on latinos. it was an opportunity for him to explain how the immigration policy could be made to work. he has talked about a softening. there

joiping me now cornell belcher and howard dean former chair of the dnc. ell, let me start with you. this is something you and i have been talking about through this election that agree that the top of the ticket and the down ballot congressional senate races and even others gubernatorial races for instance in north carolina are tethered they seem to have become untethered about a month ago now it seems that a big enough trump loss can't help but drag a lot of them down. >> that's a good point. i mean, i think what you'll see now are democrats really trying to tie the republican brand around one of the most unpopular candidates for president ever. and one of the things that i will point to is back when i was actually working for governor dean as his pollster at the dnc, around 2006 in our internal polling, we saw the generic horse race open up to 11 or 12 points. and historically, you do need that sort of ten-point gap to be opened up in order for us to flip the house because, as you know, the seats are so gerrymandered. the poll from 2012, i think it moves

joining us to break it down, our pollster in des moines, iowa, and cornell belcher in our washington,., bureau. why did we look at those four counties. what is your main takeaway from your survey, overall. >> those counties were too tempting to not take a dive if we had a chance. the geography of elections is the urban areas are going to tilt more democratic that be the state as a whole. rural areas are going to tilt more republican than the state as a whole. but suburbs in every state, it depends on the state in which way they're going to tilt. in pennsylvania, which is already a swing at a time, you have these four collar counties that are so populated that they truly can be the difference in how the state goes. so we decided to take a look at those four counties, throw some extra interviews in them, and it gives quite a stark picture of just how down in a ditch donald trump happens to be right now. >> cornell, let me ask you this question, if you look at hillary clinton's lead in those four counties, those four suburban counties around philadelphia, and is it not just better than h

joining me now, cornell belcher and howard dean. rnell, let me start with you because i feel like there's like pundits and journalists and folks in the consulting world who view the campaign as like pivoting on these key moments. then there's the data in other words -- data nerds and they're like give me five facts and i'll tell you how people are voting. what do you think? >> well, i think it's problematic for the trump campaign. i listened to the interview you gave earlier with the trump campaign manager. here's the fundamental problem. she's making the case that hillary clinton is not trustworthy and she's corrupt, right? which in a regular campaign season is probably a fairly strong argument to make against a candidate. but donald trump is fundamentally poorly positioned to take advantage of that because it's not like he is seen as more trustworthy and as more liked. in the usa today poll he's 30 points underwater on his fav/unfav. he's been driving this narrative for the last several months. and it's not necessarily a winning na
