abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has news on that. >> good morning. san francisco already has security cameras in high-crime areas but in the wake of the boston bombings police chief is floating the idea of setting up security cameras along market street to monitor big events and parades. san francisco's gay pride parade is about two months away. it is one of the biggest events hosted by the city. last october, hundreds of giants fans lined market street to cheer on the world champions after winning the world street. confetti o occupy protests as recently as last year shut down the streets and led to arrests. the chief says that he plans to suggest the camera idea at a future meeting in the wake of boston marathon bombings. lots of cameras on private buildings on market street but the chief would like much more including virtual bank security cameras to monitor big events and parades when they happen. cameras are not cheap and how they would be paid for remains to be seen. >> in the north bay a special run today will on the bombing victims leaving fro

investigators are on the scene and so is cornell bernard. >> it is heartbreaking story for the family living in this home behind me on north fifth street in downtown san jose. the firefighters responded to this home on north fifth about 11:30 last night on word people were trapped in an outbuilding behind this main house. the fire was intense. the structure was fully engulfed. the firefighters arrived and tried to make share way inside the structure. when they did, when they were able to, they found the body of a seven-year-old girl. a four-year-old girl and an adult male who were in or around the structure were able to escape the flames and the smoke but sadly, they were overcome by smoke inlallation and are being treated as a local hospital at this hour. firefighters are still on the scene trying to assess exactly how the fire started. they are cleaning up the rear of the home and trying to figure out exactly how the fire start started. we talked to the public information officer who told us that it is unclear whether there was smoke detectors working inside the structure. >> now in

. >> abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has the latest. >> five to 15 people could be dead and more than 200 injured. the explosion was so massive that it registered as an earthquake. it began as a fire at a fertilizer plant in west, texas, but exploded. it registered at a 2.1 earthquake and could be felt 50 miles away. it leveled 75 homes and businesses, with films -- with flames burning for hours and shooting high in the air. firefighters are among the injured and possible dead. dozens including a police official are unaccounted for. hundreds are being treated at local hospitals. a triage center was set up at a high school near the plant to treat the wounded but that center had to be moved further away for fear more explosions happening. locals described the scene of fear and chaos. >> shrapnel is everywhere. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has more. >> it will not be cheap. it is getting worse. more bolt could snap until they identify the problem now. retireed metal engineers did an analysis and submitted it to bay area transportation leaders this week. he criticized caltran for what he called inadequate testing of 288 high strength steel rods including 32 that broke in early march because they were too brittle. caltran figures how to fix the damaged bolts, the engineer who specialized in high strength steel is recommending the state replace all bolts which could be suspect and come up with new testing requirements for steel used on all public bridges. caltran will give an update on the fix with a big repair job that could cost millions. the new span is scheduled to open later day weekend but if the repair of the bolts is not complete the day will be pushed become. >> this morning, teachers of a middle school are holding a demonstration saying the campus is unsafe for themselves and students. teachers at the academy on 98th will hold a call to action in front of the school a

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has the latest and will join us next half hour. >> richmond police have increased patrols after a brazen daytime shooting that left a man dead. the jogger was killed yesterday at 28 and virginia streets targeted in a group of people 20 running as part after vocational class. two others were wounded. police do not have a custody but they found the get away vehicle reported stolen early in the morning. >> a man is in custody after driving the wrong way on highway four during a high-speed chase after 6:00 last night in baypoint. when the deputies tried to pull the man over for driving recklessly he took off at one point driving into oncoming traffic. officers arrested the man a short time later after he went off the road in pittsburg. he had several warrants out for his arrest. >> the body of a soldier from san jose is back on u.s. soil after he was killed over the weekend in afghanistan. the 24-year-old specialist was among five americans killed when a suicide car bomb detonateed sunday. also kill was a 25-year-old state department diplomat. the family

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has more on what led up to the shooting live at the sheriff's office. >> the suspect was severely wounded but is expected to survive. the sheriff says that the napa police officer fired on the suspect when he tried to make an arrest. >> i was in the restaurant eating and all of a sudden we heard the ambulance come by. >> frank was having dinner at the diner on tuesday when a gunshot was heard. suddenly, police converged on a parking lot across from the home depot. they had this intersection blocked off. that was blocked off. blocked off down there. >> napa county undercover narcotics team was watching a car with three men inside. that included 37-year-old suspect ramirez. >> they approached the vehicle to arrest the suspect with the warrant for violation of probation on assault with a deadly weapon case. a struggle ensued between one of the officers and the suspect. the shot was tired. >> a napa police officer shot ramirez once in the chest. he was taken to the hospital. the officer placed on leave. the sheriff says that ramirez was wanted on a probati

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with the latest. >> just incredible sight. the search is on for two carjacking suspects who crashed a stolen vehicle into the side of this apartment building at union and van ness. they then took off running. they took out a fire hydrant. look at this video shot moments after the crash. water gushing 20' in the air. police say the nissan was carjacked in modesto three days ago. c.h.p. spotted the car south of market this morning. there was a short chase. the suspect hit a muni bus, hit the hydrant and slammed in the side of the apartment building and ran away. neighbors say police around here have been asking a lot of questions. >> i was sitting on the bench. next thing, i saw the hydrant flowing. i saw five sheriff and c.h.p. and i thought, well, that is weird, and then next thing they are asking me questions and i am like, they are asking if i saw anyone runaway. >> here is the damage to the side of the suspect car, the nissan, just a lost extensive damage. airbags deployed. it is hard if believe anyone could walk away left

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has that story. cornell? >> a tragic story in downtown san jose.o this home on north fifth near jackson at 11:30 last night on word people were trapped in an outbuilding in the rear of the home. as soon as firefighters could make entry, they found the body of a seven-year-old girl inside. a four-year-old girl and an adult male who were in or around the structure were able to get out. they suffered severe smoke inhalation. they are hospitalized at this hour in san jose. firefighters continue to investigate this fire. firefighters are still on the scene, at least two engine companies are here as they are inspecting the rear of the home where the fire was centered. again, a seven-year-old girl lost her life in the fire. the firefighters trying to find out how, exactly, the tragedy happened. we are live in downtown san jose this morning for abc7 news. >> new details this morning in another deadly san jose fire that broke out at 8:30 last night on south daniel way, officials are now saying the fire claimed the lives of two people, an elderly woman was p

cornell bernard will have more in a live report in 30 minutes. >> today marks the one-year anniversary of the shooting massacre the university in oakland of the seven people were killed that day. police say a former nursing student planned the shooting because he was angry with city officials. a judge ruled in january that he is not competent to stand trial. the school will hold two memorial concerts for the victims, one on saturday in oakland and the other is april 13. >> connecticut lawmakers have come together to agree on sweeping proposals to curb gun violence in the wake of the sandy hook elementary school shooting after weeks of closed door negotiations. the proposals include a ban on high capacity magazines like the one used in december that claimed the lives of 20 children. political leaders say they are sending a message to those who not the connecticut effect on gun control would wear off. >> what they didn't know was that democrats and republicans would come together and work to put together the strongest and most comprehensive bill in the united states. >> both sides expect

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live at the site in burlingame. >> it is the first new school to burlingame in more than 50 years but a lot of neighbors who live around the school are summit drive are not happy about today's ground breaking saying this area is not safe for kids. the school was built in the 1930's and became a buddhist temple in the 1970's and the district bought back the property recently to make room for a flood of new students coming in to the district. neighbors are fighting the plan. they have gone to court to stop the school from opening, saying the school is on a dangerous road, lots of blind cubs, few sidewalks, unsafe for kids. >> there really is not even one street or road for a kid to walk on safely without being in intolerable danger doing so. >> we need this space. we are busting out at the seams with so many people moving here. >> a group of neighbors who are suing say they want a full environmental study done before the school can open. the district says that it plans to widen the street right here in front of hoover school to accommodate more cars

abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live with the latest. cornell?oting happened in a busy shopping center parking lot. we got off the phone with the sheriff, and they say that suspect remains hospitalized this morning after being shot and seriously wounded by a napa police officer. now, it happened last night when officers with a napa county special investigative unit was doing surveillance on a shopping center near a home depot watching a car with three suspects, one wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. the sheriff officials say when the officers tried to arrest the men at gunpoint, one of them got out of the car, started to struggle with one of the agents who then shot the suspect once in the chest. that officer was not hurt. he now is on paid administration leave as the investigate begins, and the suspect and at queen of the valley hospital in napa and his name and condition have not yet been released. we are live at the sheriff's department of napa. >> we have break news for you from the east bay. officers are on the scene of a deadly stabbi
