as abc7 reporter cornell bernard reports, the victim decided not to let it go. >> reporter: he didn't realize the suspect was armed. luckily he wasn't hurt. one man in custody tonight, his identity has not yet been released. >> i was glad i didn't get shot. >> reporter: stacy is talking about some scary moments saturday when he was visiting a friend on gamble court in hayward. >> i thought i heard my truck start up. i went out to see what was going on. >> reporter: his dodge ram truck had been stolen. this neighbor saw it happen. >> we just got in and had some tools bent down, and the truck was gone. >> reporter: he borrowed his buddy's truck to follow the thief down the hill toward hayward boulevard where he caught up to the suspect. >> i pulled up to the back and said, hey, that's my truck. so and so you, and pulled out a gun and shot. so he took off and i didn't bother to follow after that. >> reporter: he called 911. hayward police briefly chased the the man through city streets where he crashed into several cars. at one point police say the suspect drove toward officers. one offi

here's cornell bernard. >> you can see the smoke. >> bob saw last wednesday's fire begin in the oakland hills, which took three days to put out. according to court documents. 24-year-old alfredo bautia confested to a police officer he started the plaz with a cigarette lighter. >> anybody who starts a fire, especially up here, or anywhere where it's dry, has to have something wrong with them. >> before the fire began, police say bautista tried robbing two victims at gunpoint. they were sitting on their car on grizzly peak boulevard. drewann says she took off in her car to get away from bautista, but he chased her. >> he followed me in a stolen vehicle. and he crashed into me repeatedly until i lost control of my car. >> this was the result. she crashed her pt cruiser into a parked car. the suspect eventually ran away. hours after the fire began, witnesses saw bautista trying to steal a car at the lawrence berkeley lab. but witnesses stopped him until uc police arrived. bautista is charged with arson, attempted robbery, assault, and car theft. a pretrial hearing is set for august 15th. in

abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us today. >> reporter: very busy day here and police are still on alert just off the square here and as you can see streets are still closed here at steiner and haze. counterdemonstrators have gone. police closed it out of concern for public safety. >> reporter: hundreds of antihate counterdemonstrators rallied in the street. many in the crowd were ready to confront right wing organizers of patriot prayer which promised to hold a news conference in the square but then a surprise move by the city. the park was closed. chain link fencing went up all around. police turned people away. patriot prayer never showed. >> today the white supremacists got the message. where are they? they hid. >> reporter: many declared victory. >> i think this is a victory not only for the grass roots people of san francisco but for all of san francisco for the entire nation. >> reporter: streets around the square were closed and barricades went up to keep crowds away but this woman was detained by pleesz. soon more crowds broke through. police in riot gear prevented the

. >> abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live where the chase ended. cornell? >> reporter: dan and kristen, that wild chase lasted, believe it or not, 1 hour 45 minutes. this parked car was damaged at the end of the chase. the suspect was driving a stolen bmw the wrong way on 680. that's how it started. the chase was terminated, but picked up again in oakland. sky 7 was overhead as the stolen car suspect got off of 580 near fruitvale. he reemerged driving over a median, making a right turn the wrong way up macarthur boulevard near highland hospital. the driver headed into piedmont, that's when the driver came to a stop confronted by a police cruiser near wildwood elementary school. but he didn't give up there. he spun around, heading back into oakland, circling the piedmont avenue area. the chase appeared to be coming to an end at a quick stop near harrison street. that's when an officer brought the chase to an end clipping the back of the bmw in what's called a pit maneuver, spinning it around. >> after the successful pit maneuv maneuver, the driver of the veh

as abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard explains, her owner is still waiting for answers. >> like your new toy? >> jessica campbell can't stop watching video clips of her dog henny. campbell was moving and needed to board her in a kennel short term. she found dirty dog canine retreat in brentwood. just hours after dropping him off on saturday -- >> we got a call she had escaped. and as you can imagine, our hearts just dropped. >> kennel staffers say henny had jumped a fence and took off. campbell was panicked. she drove to help search, but says no one at the facility seemed very concerned about finding henny. so she made an appeal on facebook to help find her dog. sadly, someone did, monday morning. >> she had been hit by a car. and she passed away. >> last year, another dog named bella escaped from the same kennel. and was tossed or fell from the antioch bridge. she was badly injured but alive. at the time, derty dog denied any responsibility. >> i'm making this post to let everyone know what happened. >> derty dog owner denied our request for an interview but addressed his critics in

here's cornell bernard. >> it hurt deeply to do it. >> reporter: a few props are all that's left for this play, the foreigner, a 1980s comedy faers which involves some controversial characters. >> the foreigner involved the appearance of the ku klux klan. >> sherry lee miller, the artistic director, says the play was cast and set to open next month. but after seeing clashes between white nationalist protesters and counter demonstrators in charlottesville, she's canceling the show. >> everything, you know, broke loose in our country. and so i -- i became very concerned about doing this play. >> response to miller's decision has been mostly positive on the theater comp's facebook page. >> i wasn't pressured at all by the city. >> we found others who agree, bring down the curtain. >> with everything going on, it might not be the right play right now. >> it is a tense time. and things, people should be doing the most to promote unity. >> but this man says the foreigner couldn't be more timely. his theater company in cloverdale just produced the play two weeks ago. here's a few pictures.
