cornell bernard saw a house burn down there yesterday. this morning cornell is back in the neighborhood on castle road. what is it looking like this morning, cornell? >> reporter: much of the area remains under a mandatory evacuation order. sadly, this is what is left of the firefight on saturday. several homes were lost in that firefight, unfortunately. we are here on castle road, two to three homes burned by flying embers. there was nothing left of this home. we are seeing some burned out cars and microwave ovens, a bicycle and riding lawn mower. those are the only things recognizable on this lot. the strong winds kicked up saturday sparking a new arm of the nuns fire. forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the sonoma valley. the cal fire crews hit the area hard from the ground and air. the firefight continues today, but right now there's a 15% containment on the fire. get this, cal fire says since january, 243,000 acres have burned statewide. remarkably in the last week, 214,000 acres have burned. listen to this. >> pretty stun

we want to check in now with abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. he is in santa rosa. also very -- we know, many homes are damaged there. >> we've heard from some of the owners of those homes, cornell, what are you seeing now? >> reporter: yeah, guys, we are in the rincon valley neighborhood of santa rosa. this is eastern santa rosa. we're here on ranchette drive where home after home really on the right side of the road has been dededededededede overnight. all that's left, brick chimneys and the flames you're seeing are ruptured gas lines. now, i have counted at least six or seven homes on ranchette that have been burned. the fear now up on the ridge, rincon ridge road, more homes are burning. perhaps at this moment. that is still unclear. the area, even to us, we are free to go pretty much everywhere at our own risk, but it is just too dangerous for even us to travel up there because power lines, electrical poles, are down, blocking our way. but as you can see, the spokes contin smoke continues to billow over rincon valley. beautiful section of santa rosa. even to the

abc 7 reporter cornell bernard has been centered in north santa rosa all day. >> here's a look at the destruction. >> reporter: we are still assessing the damage here. this is center of of homes and condose, a shopping center which continues to smolder just about a hundred yards from where we're standing. you have to remember these were people's homes, these were people's lives. and these are the back yards of these homes. this was an out door table someone had in their backyard. here's a patio set, someone's patio here in fountain grove village. the damage, you really have to see it to believe it. the only way we can really understand how many homes at least in this particular neighborhood -- and keep in mind we think there are at least 200 homes -- every gas main that seems to be -- that is an indication of homes may be. just trying to figure out what this place once looked like. we talked to one man in the last hour who said he went door-to-door about 12:30 warning his neighbors saying the fire is coming. he said he felt weird because it was too late to be knocking on someone's doo

cornel bernard shows us some of the destruction. >> sky 7 surveying damage of beautiful hilltop homes reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes. some of the fire damage is off level valley road. above the town of sonoma. we found this large home off level valley in uins. the only thing left, the bathroom shower enclosure. most ridge top homes were saved. fire crews hit two separate blazes hard despite erratic wind. the fast-moving wildfire was stopped before reaching the valley floor. >> fire activity settled down overnight that gave us a big opportunity to catch up. >> even though there is good news, mandatory evacuation orders remain in place. >> burning conditions are still bad. these areas will remain closed a little longer. >> we have pictures. we have some clothes. >> sharon grabbed what she could when she and her husband were told to leave by deputies. >> just yelling to get out. >> they have lived in their house for 39 years, and it survived. they hope to return soon. >> we thought we could come back and start cleaning up. i can imagine all of the food rotting in my refrigerato

. >>> joining us on the phone is abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. rnell, in the last report, last live report, we saw those flying embers, you had to leave the live shot location because the flames were too intense. we're looking on the screen at conditions you were faced with. >> reporter: chris, we're about a half mile away from where we last talked to you. we can tell you, sadly, several homes in that area have burned, as the fire comes over the ridge closer and closer to the town of sonoma, hence the evacuation order, the mandatory evacuation order which was issued several hours ago. we have not seen anyone who lives in this neighborhood. it appears that everyone who had to get out has left, has heeded that warning. we are, like i said, about a half mile from castle road now. i have to tell you, as the crow flies we're about a mile from the town square of the town of sonoma. folks know that very historic area. a firefight, a major firefight is now on to protect homes in the sonoma valley and the town of sonoma. this is a very, very serious situat

. >>> reporter cornell bernard was on the front lines in snow in a county early this morning when the winds began picking up again, that prompted new orders sending exhausted firefighters running to face the flames. here's cornell with more. >> reporter: still quite a scene here in the sonoma valley where two fires continue to rage out of control. two homes have been claimed by the fire. firefighters believe embers flying embers from two fires burning up on the ridge is likely caught two homes here on castle road on fire early this morning around 5:00 a.m. didn't take long for the homes to be destroyed, firefighters did what they could to save them, but with little luck. protecting surrounding homes became the priority here. windy conditions have not helped the fire fight one bit. big flames continue to rage on two hills, two fires here in the sonoma valley, marching ever so close to the valley floor. cal fire says it plans to hit the fire hard with air drops and with ground crews, but those erratic winds are not helping the fire fight one bit. our heart goes out to the home owners wh

injuries as well as the day goes on and number of people missing from the fires -- but abc7 reporter cornell bernard has been live in a neighborhood that's been devastated. >> reporter: you can say that again. still assessing the heartbreaking damage here at fountain grove village, a series of homes and condos, shopping center which continues to smoerld 100 yards from where we're standing. you have to realize these were people's homes and lives. these are the back yards of these homes. outdoor table that someone had in back yard. outdoor patio set, we have a wheel barrow down there and my photographer and i couldn't help but notice a trampoline or what's left of it here in what used to be back yards that were subdivided by fences which are now gone. pan to the left, there's a barbecue still intact. somebody's patio here in fountain grove village. the damage -- you really have to see it to believe it. only way we can really understand how many homes at least in this particular neighborhood -- keep in mind, we think at least 200 homes -- every gas main flaring is indication of where homes used to be.
