cornell bernard saw a house burn down there yesterday. this morning cornell is back in the neighborhood on castle road. what is it looking like this morning, cornell? >> reporter: much of the area remains under a mandatory evacuation order. sadly, this is what is left of the firefight on saturday. several homes were lost in that firefight, unfortunately. we are here on castle road, two to three homes burned by flying embers. there was nothing left of this home. we are seeing some burned out cars and microwave ovens, a bicycle and riding lawn mower. those are the only things recognizable on this lot. the strong winds kicked up saturday sparking a new arm of the nuns fire. forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the sonoma valley. the cal fire crews hit the area hard from the ground and air. the firefight continues today, but right now there's a 15% containment on the fire. get this, cal fire says since january, 243,000 acres have burned statewide. remarkably in the last week, 214,000 acres have burned. listen to this. >> pretty stun

abc 7 reporter cornell bernard has been centered in north santa rosa all day. >> here's a look at the destruction. >> reporter: we are still assessing the damage here. this is center of of homes and condose, a shopping center which continues to smolder just about a hundred yards from where we're standing. you have to remember these were people's homes, these were people's lives. and these are the back yards of these homes. this was an out door table someone had in their backyard. here's a patio set, someone's patio here in fountain grove village. the damage, you really have to see it to believe it. the only way we can really understand how many homes at least in this particular neighborhood -- and keep in mind we think there are at least 200 homes -- every gas main that seems to be -- that is an indication of homes may be. just trying to figure out what this place once looked like. we talked to one man in the last hour who said he went door-to-door about 12:30 warning his neighbors saying the fire is coming. he said he felt weird because it was too late to be knocking on someone's doo

injuries as well as the day goes on and number of people missing from the fires -- but abc7 reporter cornell bernard has been live in a neighborhood that's been devastated. >> reporter: you can say that again. still assessing the heartbreaking damage here at fountain grove village, a series of homes and condos, shopping center which continues to smoerld 100 yards from where we're standing. you have to realize these were people's homes and lives. these are the back yards of these homes. outdoor table that someone had in back yard. outdoor patio set, we have a wheel barrow down there and my photographer and i couldn't help but notice a trampoline or what's left of it here in what used to be back yards that were subdivided by fences which are now gone. pan to the left, there's a barbecue still intact. somebody's patio here in fountain grove village. the damage -- you really have to see it to believe it. only way we can really understand how many homes at least in this particular neighborhood -- keep in mind, we think at least 200 homes -- every gas main flaring is indication of where homes used to be.
