an effort to bring refugees fleeing chaos in afghanistan to the bay area abc 7 news reporter cornell. bernardking with religious leaders and a former marine who's making the humanitarian effort his priority. everybody's trying to flee the country. not sir. abdiani says the newer cultural and islamic community center and concord has been getting many calls from friends and family members trapped in the chaos of afghanistan under taliban rule every day. they are calling and they're asking us that is there any way that we can help him out? they are afraid they cannot go outside right now the center now mobilizing to help immigrant refugees who were able to make it out and resettle in the bay area with everything from food and clothes to legal assistance. abdiyani says the city of concord pledging its support too. they promise that they're going to contact some of the landlord and the apartment big complex to see if they can help us out with sheltering. it's unknown how many families could come to the bay area but the community wants to be ready. i queue on behalf of the afghan community for help

live in san frisco, -- san francisco, cornell bernard. anchor: we saw those flags getting whipped around behind cornell. he was doing well just standing there. anchor: it is windy out there. >> it takes a strong guide to stand up against those winds because they are blowing fiercely. here is a look at the surface winds around the bay area right now. 25 miles per hour here in san francisco but it looks a little stronger where cornell was in marina green and gusts up in the north. all around the area it is pretty breezy. an onshore flow has the advantage of cleansing the air force -- air for us a little bit because we have so much more in the north bay and other parts of the state, as well. a lot of smoke near the surface has worked its way down into the bay area, mainly in the north bay. it looks like these friendly onshore winds will keep much of it from moving further southward and eastward but up in the upper atmosphere where potentially more harmful smoke exists and thicker, dirtier smoke, that is not going to make much of a move away f
