woody: i wanted to join the corps.oretically, that was all i knew, but i was impressed by the actions in the appearance of -- and the appearance of these two marines who came home on their furloughs. and i guess i decided somewhere along the way, if i ever go into the military, that is what i want to be, i want to look like those guys. admittedly, they were taller than me. you had a height requirement 6'8" before you could even get in. several years before that, they had a height requirement of 5'11" inches. you couldn't get into the marine corps unless you were 5'11". there weren't a lot of people in the net it states that were 5'11" inches were better back in those days. we just didn't make them. but anyway, i decided if i ever wanted to go into the military, that is what i want to be. i knew nothing about the marine corps. so i went in after my 18th birthday, filled out the papers to enlist, turned it into the recruiting sergeant and he looked at me and said, sorry, can't take you, the reason being i was too short.

i have been asked many times why did i select the marine corps?about the armed forces whatsoever, i didn't know the difference between the marine and the army guy. when i finally got to the recruiter and gave me my paper, he didn't look at it, he looked at me and he shook his head and said i can't take you. he said you are too short. they lowered the height requirement to 5'2" at a minimum and the recruiter came and asked me and i said yes. we shipped out an in early february, not knowing where we were going and most of us can figure out why we were taking that little place and why we needed somebody marines to do it. we lost a tremendous number of our marines in our unit and in fact my company commander and two other officers -- normally you have a commanding officer and four or five other officers, i had my commanding officer called for a meeting of those were left, the commanding officer asked me, is the only operator left could i do something about these pillboxes? i said i'll try. two of those marines that day sacrificed their lives protectin
