marine corps. it's about fifteen minutes. as part of the university series we like to visit campuses across the country and talk with professors who are authors. this week we're at the u.s. navel academy in maryland. joining us is aaron oh connell who is also the authority of this book "underdog: the making of the modern ma marine corps.." what was it established? >>1775. but the birthday is something of a myth. the marines claim 10, november, 1775. that's actually just the date that congress authorized the creation of the marine corps. .. it's a very small part of the navy. the burning cars completely separate from the navy now. >> they are completely her. this became contentious throughout the course history. they would claim they should follow the rules of the navy. when they shared the regulation of the army and eventually in 1832 they became a separate service inside. >> host: had their mission change? guests at the mission to change so much. there midship urged into the 20 century, but there were some in the jack of all

we greatly respect navy, marine corps and guard safety policy. cal fire has an aviation policy as well. we work cooperatively with the agencies here at the table to ensure when we are engaged in an aerial fire fighting event we are working within each other's policies. we have trained in a work around, we can do close air support with navy and marine corps aircraft, with the current system we have. would we like to improve upon it? absolutely. we have gone very high up in the organization to try and look at getting the r210 radio modified to the point where it can work on our vhf spectrums, that's one of our challenges we need to move forward with. but overall we're confident when we do call upon dod assets to integrate with civilian aircraft, the training regimen we put forth will keep aircrews safe and also have them be effective. there was a lot of questions from a political level as well as a public level. you've got aircraft sitting at north island, just launch them, get them in the fight. it was hard to explain to them that that's a very de

for the marine corps, and i have 2,000 hours in it, i never flew in support of a marine air ground task force so i think that's going to be a little more parochial and agree with my counterparts here but for the marine corps because we haven't necessarily been able to bring that capability directly to the commander, that's where our focus needs to be. for example, we have a radio battalion which is a great asset for us in terms of signal intelligence. it's now trying to bring that marriage of what do we need in the air to be able to support all those things in terms of electronic warfare but then marry that up with capabilities that we already have that are very well developed and bring a lot of capability to the joint forces. >> before i move on, i saw you shaking your head when i said -- and i was meaning this in a relative standpoint, but was the environment more challenging than people think in iraq and afghanistan from an ew perspective? >> well, since i was the one shake may head, i will say that what i think really challenged us was how the enemy was able to quickly adapt an use

the white house press corps is very angry about this weekend. fuming, incredulous that the president was there golfing with tiger woods and they were not allowed to watch. the white house press corps was kept out completely from the golf outing. the only journalist who got to go in was somebody from golf digest. one abc reporter calling it a disgrace. a fox news reporter saying there was, quote, extreme frustration. the president must be fearful of talking with them, them meaning white house reporters. the beltway press is seriously frustrated by what they see as their lack of access to this white house. but outside the normal interactions between the president and the press that covers the white house, the president and the vice president are putting themselves out there to answer questions about why a ban on guns would work when a ban on drugs wouldn't? and should internet freedom be added to the party platform of the democratic party? should democrats take a stand on that? and this one, the mortgage interest deduction that helps people afford

the niche we have as the marine corps assets we have the ability to locate some of our resources like shock trauma platoons, that's what we do in combat and we have experience with that and that may be something that may be of benefit to this process. >> during the last panel, mr. cahen mentioned it's so important to understand the resources that his agency has versus the ones that the military has and he said at one point they started looking down in terms of typing, i have this, you have this, how are we going to respond and get the resources we need to deal with the incident. i'd like to hear from all of you what did you learn about what the other agencies' capabilities are and how did that open your eyes? >> yesterday we had a great opportunity to look at a variety of resources. in the midst of all the demonstrations that we had, we actually had an hour lecture on dsca, which is pretty incredible to get everything about dsca in one hour. it was a great effort by the folks who do that lecture. to show you how well i listened, i have some take away points on that. the first is that
