so the ninth corps was going to operate as an independent army corps. together with the army of the potomac in general grants overland campaign that created such confusion that every time that general grant had to get or give orders for both. armies to work together he had to do that. and it's going to change. by may 24th, he had enough of that and he's going to place the ninth corps under the army of the potomac. now the fourth division was to brigades the regimenants were divided and the first one. is going to be made up of the 27th 30th and 39th and 43rd us ct. second brigade at first was the 30th connecticut colored infantry. they only had about four companies. so they were transferred to the 31st usa team. and then the 19th to 23rd the 31st uset. and in late june the 28th and 29th usct were added to that second brigade. these regiments came from all across the north. from illinois to connecticut and he's from new york to virginia. there were stories about when all of these soldiers got together. and petersburg that some members saw their old family

now following the battle of gettysburg the 11th and 12th corps including the 27th. indiana will be detached from the army of the potomac and sent west to the army of cumberland in tennessee where they'll fight. it battles such as lookout mountain in november. rankin does not return to the 27th, indiana until december of 1863 six months following his wound. in january of 64 rankin's offered an honorable discharge, but he doesn't take it. he stays with the regimen and earns a promotion to first sergeant. and as we move into the spring of 64 on april 19th ranking his commissioned first lieutenant, so he's now an officer as the regiment moves into the atlantic campaign. and during july and august of 64. he's in acting command of company a so he is commanding the company that he enlisted in as a private two and a half years prior. and as we move into the fall, he's completed his three-year term of service along with the rest of the regimen and so he's discharged from the army on november 4th of 1864 and the 27th, indiana is mustard out of service and those who reenlisted
