the storm made landfall along corpus christie. it brought little relief to the record breaking heat in the lone star state. here's with your saturday forecast bill karins. good saturday morning to you, bill. >> all the hype going into last night is what would don do in texas? don did nothing. don was a dud. look at the radar, it's hard to figure out where the storm would be. there's barely any showers or stormed associated with the system. texas was hoping for a big drenching. think of texas as a hot pizza offense. we threw a napkin in it. this storm dissipated faster than any storm i've seen before. it evaporated over the top of brownsville. the fs the big red blob moving on shore. as soon as it got to the coast and dry land in texas, poof, all of a sudden don was gone. it looks like scattered showers and storms in texas during the day. this wasn't the answer we were hoping for. not a lot of wet weather on the map. there are some showers and storms in northern m mo. your forecast for today rain likely, more or less in mexico not

we bought three machines for the corpus christi airport. and there's probably a fourth one because delta used to come in there. why couldn't there just be one and a couple of t.s.a. agents? there are never that many people there. why are -- do we have any clue why we're spending multiple -- >> that's a great question. t.s.a. has an electronic baggage screening program which they're trying to move to what they term optimal solutions for each airport. essentially what that means in many cases they're trying to remove the stand-alone machines and use more efficient systems or even so-called in-line systems which require less personnel to operate. i'm not sure if that particular airport is on track to get an in-line system. >> let me go to mr. ron for a second. one of the things i hear consistently -- consist yently from my constituents -- try saying that three times fast -- is why don't we follow more of the israeli model of dealing with people instead of things? the answer i've gotten from a lot of people within our government is israel only

the only areas that will get the heavy rain, possibly from brownsville, maybe up to corpus christi.hat's a maybe and over to laredo. there's the forecast path. instead of going up here like this, we need it to head up to corpus christi and go to the middle of texas. unfortunately it's going to head to mexico to the high mountains, which will tear it apart. the forecast for the west, everything is relatively calm, although we did have a pretty good batch of showers and storms rolling through southern new mexico and southern arizona, there's still a fau showers left. a lot of them have dried up. up in the rim countries outside the cities of arizona, there are some showers, possibly driving from prescott to flagstaff, beautiful country there, you may get a few raindrops. we'll do it again with more showers and storms later today. 107 in phoenix. a beautiful day in some areas, a little toasty in thunderstorm a. nice day in san diego, nice to be rid of the clouds, nice afternoon. it's been a quiet west forecast during the week, weekend, coming up. >>> stocks sag on the debt debate. high

it should come onshore around corpus christi or brownsville and then it will dissipate as it moves into the mountainous terrain. here's how the computer models, each of these squigly lines represents each computer, and an almost unanimous decision, it will take us south to corpus christi. only one of our computers is hinting on a northward's track. in the dark red, this is where we need the rainfall the most, so it's actually going to head for a beneficial area. the problem is, it's such a small tropical storm that it's not going to be a widespread, it's not going to hit a large area. it's only going to have a small impact. and ed why, talk about -- they would just like the clouds from this storm. with 101 in san antonio, 104 in dallas, 100-degree heat all the way up to kansas city. we now have a heat warning still in effect from kansas city to the st. louis area, but now advisories from memphis all through much of kentucky, indianapolis is under a heat advisory, too, and even areas around raleigh. so that's where the hot air is. the other story is a lot of heavy rain through the great

and mike slidell is in corpus christi, texas, where i understand, mike, that texas would like to get the rain? >> yes, we are on north padre island and we would like to get the rain and in fact, 75% of the state, thomas, is in the exceptional drought category which is the worst category in 92% of the state in extreme or exceptional and it has been extremely dry and hot. dallas today, 28 days above 100 in a row. many areas have had triple-digit heat and we'd like some water. first, the satellite loop, and this is the system that for the main fact that most of the convection or rain is south of the center. we are expecting the center to make landfall this evening between here and south padre and between brownsville and corpus, and that means that most of the rain will avoid the corpus christi area, and sure scattered showers and thunderstorms, but the rainfall totals of two to three inches up to harlingen, and brownsville, and most of the state will not get the rain they need with unrelenting heat. and some evacuations, believe it or not. the texas a&m campus in corpus christi decided

it's moving through the gulf of mexico. 500 kilometers southeast of corpus christi.rough the gulf of mexico today and then as we head into late friday as well as into saturday, we are going to see tropical storm don making landfall, looks like in the southern part of texas, not far away potentially from brownsville and corpus christi. notice the winds will briefly peak around 102 kilometers. it's going to be bringing badly need moisture for parts of the southwest. we're talking parts of mexico as well as texas. that leads me to my next story. are you a fan of ice cream? well, maybe you should head on out to washington, d.c., capitol hill. they are giving away free ice cream. this is a company. they said, hey, they have no problem giving away ice cream to democrats, republicans, tea party member, anyone, as long as they are not involved -- get this, manisha -- in negotiating the debt deal. if you're not involved, you're hot, you've got a sweet tooth, hecht on over to capitol hill. you just can't be involved in the budget deal. we're included. we get free ice cream. we

>> it off the coat of texas, 140 miles southeast of corpus christi, texas.ellite. and quite a big blob. we have time for this thing to strengthen in the next several hours and it will make landfall somewhere between 9:00 and midnight across the southeast, rather, the south texas coastline and you can see already some of the storm move inland and with the satellite radar you can see the outer bands moving into places like louisiana and through houston and we could see the potential for tornadoes with the landfalling tropical storms and hurricane, the friction against land, brings us slight rotation and potential for weak tornadoes. there is the track as of around 2:00 p.m. with a new track at 5:00 p.m. and still at 50 miles per hour sustained wind storm and we have potential for this to strengthen but as we get through the next several hours making landfall somewhere between corpus christi and brownsville, and padre island. >> they have had a lot of drought, will this help? all necessity were praying for the tropical storm in texas because 75 percent of the s

the center of the storm just offshore between corpus christi and also brownsville. winds at 50 miles an hour really making it a minimal storm at this point as it continue its to move in. what we'll find is this weakening over the next 24 to 48 hours. eventually becoming a depression throughout tomorrow morning. winds right now once again gusting up to 65 miles per hour. so we're going to see a kim inches of rainfall when all is said and done just south of corpus christi. but they need about 15 to 17 inches there in parts of texas. meanwhile back here, we are out of our drought from our very, very strong rainfall season. not only this year, but for the past two years in a row. and right now we're also tracking some rainfall up here across the sierra. it's been a while since we've had to pull out the ray todarad. but more on that later on. and on shore cooling flow. 64 in san francisco, 80 in is show and i. livermore officially with 87 degrees. so slightly above average in the east bay. but the fog coming back quickly. 68 here in san francisco and winds northwest at 1

this is the path in between brownsville and corpus christi. notice that houston looks like the rainfall will miss you. then it should head to san antonio with embedded rainstorms during the day saturday. there's nothing to talk about here on the west coast. we have a stationary front touching off showers from last night in northern portions of utah. also the hot conditions have returned to the desert without a doubt. sunshine throughout much of california. you can see where the coastal clouds are along the coast. even those burn off late this afternoon. it should be a very enjoyable forecast. temperaturewise, pretty seasonable. this is where we should be. areas that are hotter than normal include the medford reason up to boise, vegas and phoenix. there's warm air out here in the valley of california where we are in the 90s. then going to the coast after burning off the clouds and sunshine, we'll be in the 80s near l.a. 74 in san francisco. portland, seattle, you'll take the temperature comfortable in the mid-70s. that's a look at the national

cnn's rob marciano is in corpus christi for us. >> reporter: well, here we are. the morning after the landfall of tropical storm don and it's been a huge bust and disappointment all the way around. i've never been involved with a tropical cyclone where so many people onshore were cheering for it to gain strength, get together, and bring a lot of rain with it. and don did anything but that. right now we have -- well, the sun's coming up, it's a beautiful day. the surf is still high, onshore winds and coastal flood advisory is the only thing that's still active as far as advisories go. you know, in the tv business, when a tropical system makes landfall overnight and we're not live with it, we like to give what's called a ticktock, which means take slices of the evening and show you how it came ashore. and embarrassingly, this is what we came up with. check out the pocket radar here. this storm is dead. radar, empty. rain, nonexistent. well, there was dry air out ahead of this system, some wind shear, dry air over texas as well, and this thing completely evaporated

folks on the beach east of corpus christi, they enjoying the beach on a friday.e title pool and take a dip in the ocean. it will be a different scene in 12 hours, darker, and the rain will come in as will the wind. the stats has not gained much intensity. the landfall, the forecast track for the national hurricane center brings it somewhere between corpus christi, bringing it to a strong storm. the rainfall will be beneficial. texas had a long term drought, and a lot of folks that come down and vacation during the summertime are from texas. we caught up with one woman here. >> from what i know, it's pretty bad because there is no water or food to feed the cattle, and everything is burnt. we have taken a big financial hit through the state of texas, and it's obvious when you drive through the state. >> we drove here from san antonio to corpus christi, and a lot of farmers switched their crops to cotton, and now that cotton is come into harvest. and now the cotton, when you want to harvest it, you don't want rain, you want it to be nice and dry and it gives it qual

ahead of tropical storm don as it is set to make landfall this evening between brownsville and corpus christi. the only evacuations so far have been a couple of beachfront campgrounds on the coast. look at don on the satellite radar composite. a 50-mile-an-hour tropical storm moving west/northwest at 16 but wind shear, strong winds aloft and dry air have kept it from strengthening so coastal impacts will be minimal. texas needs the rain badly as you mentioned, but most of it is south of don's center and will fall across deep south texas. that means no relief for most of the state that is in its worst drought in almost 50 years. 75% of texas in the worst drought category, exceptional, and those areas need at least 15 inches of rain just to put a dent in the drought. ranchers are sending their livestock to market early because they lack grass, rain and water for feed. the drought has been so severe that the u.s. department of agriculture declared the entire state of texas a natural disaster. and, lester, tonight, the lack of rainfall from don has dashed the hopes of many texans tired of the tri

casey stegall is live in corpus christi.got a little drizzle here in corpus christi yesterday as the outer bands of the storm started to reach us. but tropical storm don was predicted to pack 50 mile-an-hour winds and dump as much as five inches of rain on parts of texas. but it turned out to be a total dud. it essentially broke apart and lost a tremendous amount of steam as it came ashore here in texas last night. in fact, it only sprinkled in most areas less than an inch of rainfalling, leaving farmers and residents of the lone star state highly disappointed, who were actually embracing don with open arms because texas is currently experiencing the worst drought on record. no rain and scorching temperatures have crippled this region. farmers have lost 30% or more of their crops this year. >> west texas, south texas, all around us is just devastated. that's been going on for a while. it's catching up with us now. >> more than 90% of the state considered to be under excessive drought conditions and rainfall totals are about

abc's matt gutman is in corpus christi tonight. matt? >> reporter: with the wind kicking up, they are running out of time. cotton is king in texas. the state's biggest crop cash. it takes 100 days to grow this. the farmers fear from tropical storm don is it will take cotton, rip it off the stock, ruin it. they're sprinting to get the cotton crop in. >> could lose it all if it's bad enough. >> reporter: farmers like david kercher, whose family has worked this land for a century, are frantically pulling tarps over precious harvest, compressing it, working round the clock. all to get the cotton off the plant. is it all hands on deck for you? >> yeah, oh, yeah. you got to get what you can and get out. >> reporter: and praying the rain and wind hold off, anything left on the plant. >> it goes into the ground. >> you lose it. >> yeah. you lose it, yeah. >> reporter: but almost everybody else in texas, folks like feed store owner david deirlam, hoping for the just opposite. >> in this case, everybody has been praying for something like this. th

takes it somewhere between brownsville, just south of corpus christi.morrow night, early saturday morning as a strong tropical storm potentially minimal hurricane. that is the ideal situation. maybe if we were bumping it up farther to the north, forecast rainfall amounts could see up to a half a foot in some spots and will take tonight places like san antonio. they will take it further north, austin, take it in dallas. although at this point it does not look like the moisture will get all the way there. they got tonight iowa and i will and i will michigan overnight and talked about that. the flooding that we saw there last night and the -- swift water rescue have flood warnings posted for today because we have more thunderstorms supposed to fire along this front. some of which could become severe. chicago, guys, broke a record for the month of july. they saw well over nine inches of rainfall. much of it come thing past weekend. more of it expected to come today. >> the problem with that record is that it was not a month of july's worth of record. it was
