a lot of them here in corpus christi. those numbers have been climbing steadily over the last several hours, of course, as people come to realize and report in, hey, we don't have any power here, some of the lucky people, though, are here in corpus christi right behind me, you can see some lights. those people have obviously not lost power. some of the areas further inland from here have. now we also have a situation on south padre island, one of the barrier islands here, just off the coast of corpus christi. corpus christi firefighters have been over there. they were battling a major house fire. those were their words over there. obviously, the chief was concerned about having to dispatch firefighters to fight that fire in the middle of a hurricane. now, that has been a concern about how first responders would handle some of these dangerous winds and the potential for flash flooding here as well. again we are told that firefighters have been over there trying to dell with that fire and keep it from spreading to any other

corpus christi is on the good side of the storm.ound on land and capture some friction and slows down a bit. this is still a nasty storm as you're talking about winds 90, 100 miles-an-hour around a whole lot of rain. here's the storm surgical on the right side. you're -- surge on the right side and you're talking about a good 10 feet. that's going to be all night because this is such a slow-moving system. the second concern is going to be rain. the reason rain's such a big problem is there's nowhere for this to go. typically you see it run onshore and then inland. we have a high pressure system blocking it and bounce off it and eventually back towards the shore and then it's no longer a hurricane in the next couple days and meanders around the coast. moving inland, approaching san antonio, drifting back to the coast and lingering. at this point i'm thinking to monday, tuesday, perhaps wednesday we're still seeing rainfall. i'll leave you with this. look at this potential path as we're looking at it just sitting there. it bounces up

not as bad as corpus christi.ut it's the flooding after days and days of rain like this that really has people most concerned. you can see my photographer is higher than me right now. it's because he is standing on top of a seawall that was put in a good century ago after a devastating hurricane here. the seawall did its job. there you hear some devastating lightning and thunder there. the seawall did its job with hurricane ike in 2008 which devastated this area. the surges caused some flooding on the other side of the gulf, on the bay side. so they know flooding can be an issue here. you'll find markers all over town that show just how bad the flooding got during hurricane ike. at the same time, people are staying put. we actually shot a business just down the road here that had a sign up that said "open until all the letters blow off this sign." i haven't checked in the last few minutes but it will be interesting to see if the letters are still on that sign. katy? >> yeah, and if anybody in texas knows what it's
