sweat was free for months under the tunnels under the clinton correctional facility. at 11:30 p.m.fter the last head count, he with go down into the tunnels and come back up at 5:30 a.m. before the first head count. he would chip away at the concrete walls using a sledgehammer and hand tools. he caught a lucky break. they turned off the steam to the steam pipe providing heat to the prison on may 4th. he was able to short circuit by cutting through the steam pipe with a hacksaw. it took him over a month to do it. also interesting, they hit a sewer pipe at one point. they thought they could escape through that ala "the shawshank redemption." that is how the character in the movie did that. one other detail the two joked how "the shawshank redemption" character took 20 years to escape from that prison and it took them 10. there was question who was the mastermind. matt escaped twice before. once successfully. it was assumed he was the mastermind. investigators saying it was david sweat. the planning started in earnest in january of 2015 when sweat was moved next to matt's cell. he cut
