cory booker is determined to tackle it. the newark mayor is doing some pretty extraordinary this week, living off food stamps himself, just food stamps. he has just $29 and change for seven days' worth of food. this is what he bought. life-changing experience for him, what he sees as a wake-up call in all of america. he hasn't talked to anyone on camera after starting this but that changes tonight. joining me for an exclusive interview is mayor cory booker. welcome to you. why did do you this? >> you know, it actually started by a late night conversation over twitter with a woman who was pooh-poohing government's role in provision nutrition for kids. i shot back at her, we had a couple exchanges and finally i said why don't we both live on food stamps. i went to bed not thinking much of it and got up the next morning and it had spread through the social media world, and was a bigger story. i called my staff and said we're doing this. >> you were on day four of this. this is the exact pile of food that you got. >> yes. >> wh

a lot of people have brought up cory booker's name. can any democrat in nrge win not named cory booker? >> i think so. i have talked to cory and i have spoken to other candidates that will be running and i think it is going be a spirited race. let's remember, that jersey is a democratic state. as you know, new jersey has not experienced the revival that we've seen in some of the states that are led by democratic governors. i would argue that a year in politics is a long time, no question we're running against someone who is popular. that can change. if we have a strong candidate that will continue to turn the economy in new jersey and move it more quickly, we think that we can do a better job in leading new jersey with a number of candidates that might run. >> let me ask you more broad liquor about the kind of voters you are going after. in a lot of key states it seems like people vote differently for governor than they do from federal office. there has been democratic governors of oklahoma and you mentioned montana who is a ret state.

cory booker, christiane amanpour, and others will join us. it got heated.al, "guns in america." cory booker, let's start with you. it just is heartbreaking. it's agonizing. you can't say anything to make it any better. what is the answer? >> first of all, this is not as rare as people might think. there is a virginia tech, so to speak, 30 to 34 americans die every day due to gun violence. what gets me most frustrated, i guess, is we all agree in america. in fact, if you look at gun owners, i work with a coalition of mayors called the coalition against illegal guns. a republican pollster polls gun owners and nra members and you get from 70% to 90% depending on the common sense issues we can do to make our country safer. let me give you one example. roughly 40% of guns sold in america are sold in what is called a secondary market, in other words, private sales where there's no federal registration at all. where people with criminal backgrounds, you could get someone on the terrorist fly list who can't get on a plane, but they can go to many of these secondary
